For some reason, most likely because of finances, Mattel started scaling back their Sizzlers line in 1972. A meager four new models were offered.

The 1972 models included: Co-Motion Double Boiler Flatout Up Roar These were all long-chassis Sizzlers in molded colors. 1972 Track Sets included: Breakin' 8 Set Control Set Super Control Set 1972 Car Sets included: Mad Scatter Set 1973 ushered in the Fat Daddy Sizzlers. "Fat Daddies", as they are affectionately called today, are now one of the most highly desired and sought after Sizzlers. They are oversized bodies with huge tires. The chassis are the standard Sizzlers long chassis. Like the 1973 Hot Wheels, these were made for only one year, with scaled back production runs. This resulted in a limited number of these produced, pushing collector prices through the roof today. 1973 models included: Fireworks HiWay Hauler Lawmill Needle Nose Ram Rocket Red Baron Steering Trailer Steering Trailer Set Track sets for 1973 included: Road Chase Set Road Sprint Set Steering Trailer Set Super Road Chase Set Target Set Target Race Set Accessories for 1973 included: Pit Box In 1974, there was a hiatus in Sizzlers production. Mattel decided to sell their remaining warehouse stock in the only new set offered that year: Wild Oval Set The packaging and artwork was real poor on this set. It contained leftover cars, sometimes including both long and short chassis models in the set. New old stock was still sold in stores and commonly available to fill the time frame until 1976, when the Sizzlers II models hit the stores.
