travel
  • generally, what's the travel like in germany?

  • busses and trains are almost flawless in their on-time-ness.
    (punctuality?)
and they run at very regular intervals. apart from at night, when things seem to slow down a great deal.
but taxi's are reasonably priced, and if you can speak enough german... haggling with a gringo at 4AM over 5DM can be quite amusing.

  • how much for the trains?

  • a monthly rail pass can be yours for 100DM. this gets you from herrenberg to hulb/böblingen as much as you like.
and for an extra 18DM - you can be the proud owner of a monthly Netz (network) card. this allows you to go all the way (ooh err). but cannot be used at night or during busy periods. we think. nobody is entirely sure.

  • what if i want to go visit uncle fritz in munich? how many lira?

  • errrrrrm.... you can buy a bahnkarte for around 130DM. this gives you 50% off any rail tickets you buy (no.. not monthly passes... nice try)
and for an extra 25DM - you can get it internationalised. which gives you 25% off tickets to anywhere in europe.
so you can go to prague and give them some grief on the cheap.
train time tables and prices can usually be found at http://www.bahn.de - if you have the balls to check out all that german:

  • where do i get all these crazy cards from?

  • herrenberg, böblingen and stuttgart all have stations. just go in there and look english. someone will sort you out. we'll see if we can find the appropriate forms and stuff for you.
other big towns might also do tickets. not entirely sure.

  • if i were to get drunk in stuttgart and wanted a taxi home - how much drinking money would it cost me?

  • give or take a bit of haggling... 100DM. there is occasionally a night bus at around 2.30 which is useful for shy pissheads...
if you're hard enough.. and have managed to find a club which doesn't do your 'ead in after being in there for 2 hours.. you could always stick it out til 6 in the morning when the first train rolls...

that's a big 'if' by the way.
