POWER IN NUMBERS

Welcome to the concrete schoolyard, the page to educate yourself about hip-hop's 'throwback' heros, Jurassic 5. Yeah, a lot of 'haters' will call them throwbacks, but in their own words they're 'paying homage as well as returning favors.' Chali 2na, Akil, Marc7 Zaakir, DJ Cut Chemist and DJ NuMark formed the group in 1993 in LA.

How many of you out there in the Bay Area caught J5 at the Smokin Grooves Tour last summer, or the show at the Filmore? If you didn't make it, you missed a couple of great shows. It was evident by the end of the short (but sweet) Smokin Grooves set that J5 had won over many new fans. By the time the Filmore show came around the new album had dropped a week earlier and the place was packed. After the show the guys stayed up on stage to shake hands and give autographs. Any of you who goes to shows like this one knows that doesn't happen too often.

Can't get enough of J5? Check out their work with others, including Blackalicious' Blazing Arrow (2na guests on '4000' Miles and Cut Chemist supplies the beat for 'Chemical Calisthenics'). Cut Chemist has been at work with other Quannum artists as well. Check out the Brainfreeze album, featuring Chemist 'longside DJ Shadow. Just in case you didn't know, both NuMark and Chemist used to spin with the excellent latin group Ozomatli.

What? It's already 2003 and you haven't seen the "What's Golden" video? Choose Windows Media Player, or Real Player.
