The Lowestoft factory commenced by 1758, after earlier trials,  and ceased production in 1799.  The  factory closed in 1802, Their early period was from 1757-61 and their middle period was from 1761-70 finally their late period was from 1770-99.

They had a soft paste porcelain using bone ash, and from 1757 to 1776,  only blue and white painted wares where produced, decoration of early wares are well detailed and less stylised than post 1765.

Unusual shapes are highly collectable and there is no factory mark, but many pieces pre 1775 are numbered inside the foot rim or on the base if there is no foot rim.

Numbers are usually 1-11, and letters of the alphabet where also used.  If there is any damage to the piece it usually stains brown.

Art Deco takes its name from the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts decoratifs of 1925,  art deco is a style associated with the late 1920s and early 1930s, with the emphasis on richly coloured  and semi-abstract pattern, exotic materials and styles this included a decorative approach to  modernism.  Although that is the historically correct but rather narrow  definition, art deco is now widely used to describe anything made between 1920--1940.

Its roots lie  in some facets of Art Nouveau, particularly the formal geometry.  Also important in its formation where elements of Cubism and abstract art, primitivism ,  Russian revolutionary art,  modernist architecture, jazz music, American films, especially musicals and even modern methods of transport.  There are two distinct  phases of Art Deco.  Firstly it is colourful, dramatic, abstract and angular, with a traditional use of materials and is seen at its best in textiles, ceramics and graphics.

Often garnish and abrasive in its extreme approach to modernist decoration,  this phase is epitomised by the pottery of Claris Cliff, by the fashions of the period, and by the extreme  use of geometry and symbols such as ziggurat and the lightning flash.

The second later phase , associated more with the 1930s, reflects a cooler, more elegant approach to modern design, with pastel and ice-cream colours, rounded forms and an understanding of modernism that is more than purely decorative.  Powerfully  inspirational where Hollywood styles and the streamline shapes of ships, trains, and planes where applied to objects as diverse as cinemas, teapots, and radios. This second phase, with its international appeal paved the way for the novel styles of the 1950s
