WHAT ARE PRIMARY SOURCES & HOW DO YOU USE THEM? 1. PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE PERIOD Who took the photograph? How did you find it & where is the original located? Why do you think the photo was taken? Who was the intended audience? What details in the picture yield the most info? 2. GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS (maps, legal records, etc.) Does the map have a key? Are people & their activities evident on the map? Who made the map? Why was it made? Was it accurate? Which was is North? How far is 1 mile on the map? (or 10 miles, or other distance) When was the map made? What would a map of the same area today look like? What questions come to mind when you look at the map? 3. PERSONAL RECORDS: (Diaries, letters, etc.) What do these records tell us about the people involved in the war? 4. THE ARTS & POPULAR CULTURE: (music, art, folklore, mass media, publications) Who produced the work & who was the intended audience? What emotion do you feel when you experience the work? |
