Character Profile                                                              Character Name: Joyce Summers Joyce Summers is Buffy the Vampire Slayer's mother. Joyce is a single mother, trying hard to handle the life of her daughter, the chosen one. She can't help but worry every time Buffy goes out on patrol. It was easier for her in the first two seasons, when she was totally unaware of her daughter's double life, as the slayer. Although it took her some time, and a few months alone without Buffy around, Joyce finally learned to accept that her daughter had to fight evil. In the episode, "Band Candy" Joyce and Giles, as well as all the other adults of Sunnydale, ate a large amount of candy, which contained a secret ingredient that caused them to act like reckless teenagers. giles and Joyce end up sleeping together and since they remember everything that happened while they were high on the candy, they try to avoid one another. In the 5th series of Buffy, Joyce begins to suffer from headaches and light headedness. In this season Joyce not only gains a daughter in the form oo Dawn, but is also diagnosed with a brain tumour and has to have brain surgery, which is successful. Joyce is given the all clear and is released from hospital. In the episode 'The Body' Buffy comes home to find her mother dead on the couch. She and her sister Dawn are devastated.  We later find out that Joyce suffered a brain haemorrhage.
