THE LOWDOWN: Directed by Ridley Scott, the acclaimed director of Thelma & Louise, Blade Runner, and Alien, the film was somewhat hastily labeled as a Dead Poet's Society at sea. Though it's ending does seem overly dramatic and tacked on, the film is actually quite absorbing. The climatic boat wreck scene is superb. Given it's many strengths, it's surprising that the film did poorly at the box office. It did, however, have a healthy run when it hit video in the summer of 1996. |
