SLT NAC Update - 18th November 2003
This is to let you know what the current state of play is:
On the table from the Department of Health are 5 profiles as follows:
Profile Title | Band | Salary Range |
---|---|---|
Speech and Language Therapist | Band 5 | £17,548 - £22,710 |
Specialist SLT | Band 6 | £20,129 - £28,387 |
Highly Specialist SLT | Band 7 | £25,290 - £33,342 |
Principal SLT | Band 7 | £25,290 - £33,342 |
Consultant SLT | Band 8a-8b | £32,258 - £46,451 |
There are also a number of profiles for generic clinical managers which were agreed centrally as being applicable for managers and were felt to be appropriate for SLT managers, these spread across 8a-8d (i.e. salary range of £32,258 - £67,096).
The above profiles have been discussed in regional and local meetings (in some instances only profiles at bands 5,6 and the highly specialist have been discussed due to the principal and consultant being very recent). The consensus across the regions was that no profiles should be signed off (i.e. agreed for use in early implementor sites) until more work had been done.
All the above profiles have been discussed in the SLT National Advisory Committee (made up of delegates from each region). There was general disappointment with the scoring of the principal and consultant profile. All the profiles were looked at in detail and comments made which amended the wording of the 5,6 and highly specialist to more effectively describe the posts. Comments have also been made which improve the scores of the principal (to 8a-8b) and the consultant (8b-8d). These comments have been sent to the Department of Health for consideration and we are awaiting their feedback.
We have also been advised that in the Early Implementor sites there has been some difficulty with the matching of the generic manager profiles to clinical managers, i.e.. those retaining clinical work, particularly in a specialist area. This will need to be considered.
Next Steps - waiting for feedback from the Department of Health on comments submitted, when (if) revised profiles are issued then they will be consulted upon prior to any decision making.
Need to respond quickly as DoH is applying a degree of pressure to have profiles agreed by the end of the year.
