No 224 – 5th December 2003
Speech and Language Therapy Profiles

The National Advisory Committee for Speech and Language Therapy have agreed to sign off the five draft profiles at Bands 5,6,7,8A/B and 8A/C. These will be published by the DoH and released to the Early Implementer sites for testing. Joint guidance produced with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy will be distributed to ensure correct application of the profiles.

Band 5 applies to the newly qualified therapist and band 6 for a SLT with limited experience. Band 7 will apply to therapists who lead in a specialist area but not a lead specialist for the trust. The principal profile at band 8A/B is unique amongst Allied Health Professions and recognises the expert clinical lead role. This profile creates a clinician based career structure progressing through to consultant level at band 8A/C. This will reward SLTs who wish to pursue their careers in a clinical role and many SLTs will increase their pay as a result of agenda for change. These profiles have produced a pay and career structure that will set Speech and Language Therapy apart from all other Allied Health Professions.

The level and range of these profiles are a testimony to all the representatives who participated in the process and were fully committed to achieving a successful outcome.
