If you're new to playing outlaws, chances are that you're getting frustrated by how bad you are getting beat. Well here I will put up a few tips, and some FAQ's, ( frequently asked questions ) that will hopefully help you become a better player.
There are basically 3 things you need, to become a better player. One of those things is a half way decent connection. If you are getting all people with a ping off more then 400ms ( or red and yellow latency bars ), I strongly suggest you get a better ISP, ( Internet Service Provider ) preferably broadband ( DSL, or cable ) but for all you dial up users, I'll show you a couple of things you can do to get a better connection.
Hopefully this will give you a little better ping while playing.
Now, the second thing you're going to want is FPS ( Frames Per Second ) this is best described as the speed you travel in your game, I'll tell you the best way to configure outlaws so you can get the most fps with, or without a 3D card. First thing you're going to want to do if you DON'T have a 3D card is to go to your main menu and go to "select video mode" make sure it is on direct draw, select the lowest resolution you can stand to see, for me it was 400 x 300, (this is an important step to having good fps.) Next go to "sound configuration" make sure it is on "direct sound", go to the advanced tab at the bottom, now you're going to want to put movie audio, and mixer channel count, to low quality (fastest), and 4 channels (fastest), then accept, and exit. Now go to main menu again and "play game" but instead of the main game, go to multi player, make sure "windows sockets" are selected, (using this tends to have less lag in a game) then go to host game, and pick your favorite map. (You can go to any map you want like this, you don't have to be over the internet to do it), enter the game and go to the options menu, and then the other options tab, here, uncheck everything except auto aim (if you use it) and cross hair (if you use it), accept and exit. Now (very important ) lower your screen size inside the options menu, as small as you can handle, accept it and then exit. There! You are now set. Go into the game and type "olfps" and see how many more fps you've got. Also, while your in a game it is a good idea to take off the list of names of the people playing by pressing "T" especially when playing a large teams game, believe it or not, those bright red and blue highlights can restrict you as much as 15 fps from your game. NOTE: I also recommend if you have the free space on your hard drive, that you custom install outlaws, and select to install everything, including taunts instead of using the recommended way, this way, your CD-ROM drive doesn't spin when you or some one else uses taunts No 3DFX?.......No Problem! Well, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but the next best thing is your MGL drivers. What's MGL? MGL are special drivers hidden on your outlaws CD, when I used these drivers, I tripled my fps, I've learned that some ISP's don't work with it, but give it a try if you don't have any 3DFX, first.....
Once you have copied the files into the Outlaws directory:
This should give you great FPS, and although I strongly recommend, you pick up some 3DFX, this should hold you over until then. If you have 3DFX (voodoo 1, 2, or 3, or any other 3dfx card) you have the option of over clocking them to give you more fps generally as much as double it. Here our a few simple ways to ver clock your voodoo 2, and voodoo 3. VOODOO 3 The first thing you want to do is make sure you have the latest voodoo 3 drivers which you can pick up here. Then grab your self Gary Peterson's voodoo 3 over clocker on our files page. After doing that, and installing it, you have to configure it. Here are the settings you're going to want to use.
I should also note that you should make sure your regular voodoo 3 setting are configured right, to do; Follow these steps:
VOODOO 2 Over clocking your voodoo 2 is fairly simple, follow these simple steps:
At the bottom of that, copy and paste these settings: SET FX_GLIDE_NO_SPLASH=0 SET SST_FASTMEM=1 SET SST_FASTPCIRD=1 SET SST_VIDEO_24BPP=1 SET SST_GRXCLK=57 SET SST_SWAP_EN_WAIT_ON_VSYNC=0 SET FX_GLIDE_SWAPINTERVAL=0 SET SST_SCREENREFRESH=120 SET SST_GAMMA=1.0 There you go! I hope this helped you out. Disclaimer: all these settings are to be used at your own risk, I will not be responsible for any damage done to your video card. These setting may void your warranty, consult your owners manual for more information. Last and probably most important is skill, the best way to get more skill is practice, practice, practice. Play people that are better then you, and observe the way they move. Don't get frustrated and quit when you are playin a game and your Opponent is slappin' you around silly. If the only thing your using is a keyboard for controls, you wont get any where, you have to use both mouse, and keyboard. Strafing Strafing is very important to learn in time, I've never seen the best not strafe, learn to configure your keyboard or mouse to how it bests suits you, it can make a big difference. Character Doc and James are the most popular characters to use, I strongly suggest you practice your skills with one of these two characters. For more info on characters, and their weapons, visit my Character profiles page. Maps Get to know the maps, go in there by your self ( like I explained in the FPS section ) and figure ways to out - smart your opponent, like ducking behind corners, or hiding behind buildings, jumping from one building to another all these thing can help a lot. Sanctuary is probably the most played standard map, but if you're playing a 1 on 1, it can be a bit tough if you're playing an opponent that knows what he's doing. Here are a few helpful tips. (NOTE: you may not be able to do some of these manuevers with low fps, but give it a try.)
Bunkers is another popular map played for 1 on 1's. Alot of players like to play mary here, because its small, and with a little practice, you can kill your opponents with 1 shot of her shotgun.
Repair doesn't have too many tricks, but here are some tips I picked up. You'll definitely want try and grab either the heavy boiler plate inside, or the medium on the roof outside. Then try and get the medic.
Dry Gulch, isn't played all that often, but when it is, it's good to know a few things. This map probably has the most secrets out of any standard map. Here they are.
ML stands for "Marshall law" it means no sheriff's badge, invisible cream, or sawed off shotgun allowed. This is how the majority of multiplayer outlaws games are played. You will usually see "ML" some where in the game room info. A map is basicly a new level available for download. You can get new maps at our map section, or at paleface.net. To boot someone in a game firts bring up the chat box by pressing Alt + Y, then type "BOOT:Playersname" without the quotes. The best character is a matter of opinion. Most of the so called "advanced" players would argue that Dr. Death is the best character. For more information visit our character profiles section on our files page. "lol" means "Laughing out loud" "rofl" means "Rolling on the floor laughing" and "lmao" means "Laughing my arse off". A ping is the time it takes to travel from one computer to another. Fps stands for "Frames Per Second". It's best described as your speed in the game. To find your fps type "olfps" without the quotes, and without using the alt + y chat box. A clan, or posse, is a group of players who form a constant team in any specific game. 3DFX is a video chipset that allows graphic acceleration. Example of 3DFX would be any of the Voodoo series video cards. To find your ping in the zone go to you msdos prompt, and type "ping www.zone.com" without the quotes. |
