What's up with Jonathan:
Jonathan is still going ahead with his campaign for state senator,
despite Martha's reservations. After all, what if they find out about
Clark? But Jonathan is confident that he can handle anything that comes
his way. He is also taking some pills, theoretically to help him manage
his stress.
Kent also plans on winning his way - with honesty and integrity. When
Jack Jennings' former campaign manager plants some quotes about Jonathan
supporting corporations, Jonathan immediately fires him. Instead, he
chooses to go with Lois - who is not battle-tested but is a fierce Kent
believer.
What's up with Martha:
Martha is worried about the campaign. Not only is she worried about how
competitive her husband has become, she also knows that the campaign is
now low on cash. Enter Lionel Luthor. She runs into Lex's father while
taking out the trash, and he offers her enough money to match his son's
campaign funds. He insists "blind idealism" isn't enough to win the
senate seat. On the other hand, he points out, maybe she doesn't want
Jonathan to win in the end. She doesn't take the check, but she continues
to mull over the offer after Lionel leaves.
What's up with Lex:
Lex is extremely determined to win the senate seat. Why? Because he likes
the idea of having to work towards a goal for once in his life. He has a
loyal army of supporters in Students for Lex Luthor, a group
headquartered at Central Kansas A&M. Its leader, Samantha Drake, knows
everything about Lex and will do anything for him to win. While he does
preach that "defeat is not an option," he is appalled when he hears that
someone has bound and hung Jonathan. While Clark thinks Lex is behind
that attack, Lex insists that it was not him. Lex even offers a reward to
the person who finds the assailants.
What's up with Chloe:
Two men have attacked Jonathan at his home, and only then does he admit
to Clark and Martha that he's been answering strange phone calls since
the senate campaign started. At the Daily Planet offices, Chloe traces
the calls back to to the Students for Lex Luthor.
Meanwhile, Clark tells her about the fact that he and Lana have not had
sex since he got his powers back. He's afraid something weird will happen
in the moment. While Chloe feels strange discussing the matter, she lets
him know that he better tell Lana his secret before she finds out from
someone else. Chloe also points out that Lana is already suspicious;
she's studying astronomy at school and learning more about the meteors
she encountered.
What's up with Lois:
Jonathan decides to hold a campaign rally despite his recent attack. But
whoever is after him is still on the loose. Lois is backstage when
Samantha, the leader for Students for Lex Luthor, decks Lois in order to
find a good place to shoot her rifle. However, Lois does not let up. Then
Samantha takes control again and points a gun at Lois, who is aiming the
rifle at Jonathan. After all, it makes perfect sense that Lois would
shoot Jonathan: he let her stay in his home and made her campaign
manager; she must be the other woman! Then Lois fights back once again,
but Samantha still manages to take an accurate shot at Jonathan.
What's up with Clark:
With his superhuman powers, Clark can hear the shot and see it travel in
slow motion. He manages to catch the bullet right before it hits
Jonathan. He tracks down the source of the shot - underneath Lois. Lois
has subdued Samantha.
How it ends:
Even though it would upset Jonathan immensely, it appears that Martha has
decided to take Lionel's help. She gets into Lionel's limo, and they
drive off.
