Burglars who can walk through walls rob Luthor mansion. When Lex realizes they may have evidence of his secret project, Clark is suspicious of his motives.
What's up with the tattooed gang? While Chloe and Clark are at the Luthor mansion, three burglars enter the vault, stealing money, jewels, valuables, and a computer disk. Kryptonite pulses through their veins, and they're marked with glowing green tattoos. Turns out these guys are former high school jocks gone wrong. The gang has hit others in Smallville, including the S&L. The wild thieves realize the value of the stolen LuthorCorp. disk and demand $1 million blackmail from Lex.
What's up with Chloe? Chloe and Clark surprise the tattooed gang during the burglary. During a struggle, Chloe is thrown from an upper window. She lands in the hospital with a concussion and broken arm. When she awakens, Chloe remembers the gang's tattoos. Researching from her hospital bed, Chloe makes a connection between the kryptonite and how the gang can walk through walls.
What's up with Clark? Clark blames himself for not saving Chloe from the fall. At the suggestion of his parents, he turns his anger into a constructive search for some answers. Suspecting a Fordman's customer as one of the gang members, Clark realizes Whitney's involvement and warns him.
What's up with Whitney? Whitney is feeling desperate because he lost his college scholarship. He figures he's doomed to spend his life in Smallville. Two of the tattooed gang members visit Fordman's store, inviting Whitney for beers at their place. The gang is looking for some new blood to join them. As they try to recruit him, they tattoo him with kryptonite. Outside, the gang throws a terrified Whitney in front of a speeding truck. The truck passes right through him, proving his new ability. Later, the gang takes Whitney along to their meeting with Lex to collect blackmail money. Lex meets them with an empty briefcase. Whitney objects when they almost choke Lex to death, just as Clark arrives.
What's up with Lex? In attempt to protect himself and the sensitive information on the disk from getting out into the public, Lex hasn't reported anything missing to the police after the break-in. Clark is suspicious of this, but Lex swears there's nothing illegal about the sensitive info. Lex tells Clark about the attempted blackmail. Lex wants revenge on the gang and to protect the info on the disk, whether Whitney is involved or not.
What's up with Lana? Aunt Nell is packing up the theater. Lana learns that Lex is the buyer of the building. Lana tells Lex how sentimental the theater is to her. Lex says she provides no good business reason to change his plans of a parking garage in the space. Clark tells Lana about Whitney's lost scholarship. Now she understands his gloomy behavior. After the attempt on Lex's life, Whitney goes to Lana for help. She gets Clark, and Whitney recounts the story.
How it ends: Whitney and Clark go to the gang's place. Clark finds the disk, using his x-ray vision. The gang discovers them there, and Clark crushes the disk in his hand rather than give it up. One of the gang members puts his fist through Clark's chest. The two others threaten Whitney, taking him away. Lex arrives and subdues the remaining gang member. He calls police, while Clark rushes out to find Whitney. One gang member has Whitney with a gun to his head, holding him under a junked car, suspended from above. The other gang member intends to drop the car and crush him. Clark gets Whitney out of the way before the car drops, smashing the gang member. Police arrive and take the other two away. Back at the theater Lana presents Lex with a business plan Clark helped her with. The plan is to register the building as a historical landmark and social center. Her aunt could manage it, and Lana could work there. Lex agrees convinced it would be an interesting partnership.
