What's up with Chloe: Chloe is taking a shower in Lois's apartment above the Talon when the power goes out. In the dark, the spirit of a now-deceased girl haunts Chloe. Chloe screams, and Lois finds her - but her wrists are slit. Lois takes her cousin to the hospital. Everyone worries that Chloe has gone insane - just like her mother did years ago. Clark especially is worried about Chloe's state of mind, but Chloe insists that she's not crazy. She sees the girl again in the hospital. She tells Lana about who she saw, and Lana runs to Lex for help. Lex promises Lana that he will get the best doctors at Belle Reve involved in Chloe's case.

What's up with Clark: Clark is not too happy to see Lex at the hospital. Lex tells Clark of his intentions; Clark doesn't approve. He sneaks Chloe out of there. He and Chloe return to Lois's place.

What's up with Lois: Lois is not very pleased with Clark's actions. After all, Chloe still needs care. Lois's point is proven when Chloe sees the girl again. Chloe desperately asks Clark to look in the wall for the girl Chloe sees. Clark is skeptical, but then he sees the bones of a girl in the wall. The kryptonite in her bracelet weakens Clark, and Chloe tries to touch it - when she does, the spirit of the girl escapes into her body. Gretchen is a girl who died at the hands of a psychotic orderly named Michael - who now works at the hospital Chloe was admitted to. Lois doesn't know this when Michael knocks on her apartment door, looking for Chloe - who, as Gretchen now, is seeking out Michael to get revenge for what he did to her years ago. Michael is looking for Chloe, but instead he takes Lois back to his home.

What's up with Martha: Lionel stops by, via the Kents' back door, to see how Martha is doing. She's holding up, but she would prefer if he would try the front door next time. Lionel proceeds to point out again that he knows what it's like to lose a spouse, and if Martha needs anything, she can turn to him. Lionel also notices that Martha is looking over some official documents - documents pertaining to public business. Is Martha going to take over her late husband's senate seat? After talking it over with her supportive son, she decides to take on the challenge.

What's up with Lana: Clark wants to know why Lana went to Lex when in need. In turn, Lana wants to know why Clark took Chloe out of the hospital without telling her. Lana insists that she loves Clark. However, couples shouldn't keep secrets from each other. Clark doesn't respond. Lana leaves.

How it ends: Michael is about to torture Lois when Chloe/Gretchen arrives at this home. She attacks him with her stun gun, then goes to find Lois. The Michael rebounds and ties both Chloe/Gretchen and Lois to chairs. She's about to kill both of them when Clark (who used information from the Daily Planet's computer to locate Michael's address) tries to save the day. But the kryptonite bracelet that Chloe/Gretchen is now wearing weakens him once again. It is only when Chloe/Gretchen appeals to "Mikey's" softer side is she able to get close to him and touch him with the bracelet, thus channeling Gretchen from Chloe's body into Michael's. The Michael/Gretchen stabs him/herself. He dies.
