What's up with Lana: Feeling lonely and distraught, Lana becomes hooked on a dangerous drug - a serum derived from kryptonite that allows her to flatline and eventually, after several tries, see her parents in the afterlife. She gets so hooked that she spends her life savings and even tries stealing from Lex to get her fix. The only comfort than she can find of late is in the presence of her deceased parents.

What's up with Chloe: At the Daily Planet offices, Chloe is researching stories when she comes across a story about an epidemic spreading in Honduras - and a picture of Dr. Fine hiding in the foliage. She immediately alerts Clark, who supposedly killed Dr. Fine in the Fortress of Solitude. However, Dr. Fine is back.

What's up with Clark: Clark speeds over to Honduras with the picture of Dr. Fine and asks locals if they know who the man in the picture is. Finally, he meets a boy who is carving a mini-spaceship out of wood. This boy has seen Dr. Fine. He leads Clark to the area in the forest the spaceship was once parked, leaving back a dark, shadowy mark.

What's up with Martha: Martha is attending the Governor's Ball, but Lionel, still trying to make his move, asks her if he can be her date. Martha warns him that their friendship isn't anything more than that - a friendship. Lionel says he understands but still wants to go with her. Martha is okay with that.

What's up with Lex: Lex goes for his gun when he thinks there is a burglar in his home. However, it turns out to be Lana - who is desperate for money and her next fix of the death serum. Once Lex realizes that it's her, he sits her down and tries to comfort her. He says he knows what it's like to lose a parent. Lana appears to appreciate the empathy - until Lex goes to get a blanket for her. She then leaves with the keys to his car.

How it ends: The police target Lance, the medical student who created the serum, after Ally, his friend, dies from it. Lex searches for Lana, who has stolen some serum from Lance. Lance is about the kill Lana when Lex arrives. Instead, Lance injects Lex with the serum. Lex then sees his mother, who is not happy with the choice he made regarding his senatorial campaign against the late Jonathan Kent. She warns him that he will kill many people, and before he returns to the present - with the help of Chloe, who injects him with the remedy that brings the patient back - he has a black glove on his right hand.

Lance also injects Clark with the serum. Clark tried to fight Lance, but he could not use his powers while Lana was watching. Clark sees his father. He apologizes to his father for his death, but Jonathan will have none of his sympathy. He tells Clark that he is happy to have died for him. Clark does not understand. Jonathan elaborates. He protected Clark from Lionel Luthor - because Lionel knows Clark's secret. Jonathan tells Clark he must return to the world and be a symbol of peace and justice.

When Clark returns from his visit with Jonathan, Lance is dead. Lana killed him. Clark is glad to be back, but he has much work to do. Protecting his mother from Lionel Luthor is on the forefront of his mind.
