The monorail proposal will be on the November ballot. There are many reasons why this issue should be defeated (read SMARTrans and check the rest of this website). The most important reasons are:
-
This monorail does not exist anywhere in the world! This concept bears little relationship to the average amusement park monorail. Its alleged High Speed introduces many complex, unsolved problems. It has not even been designed, much less tested. Nor have any of its key components been tested . . . not the propulsion system, not the braking system, not the running gear, not the guideway. Developing it to the level of reliability required before it could be deployed in Colorado's mountains will require hundreds of millions, perhaps even billions, of dollars. If only $50 million were required, its promoters would raise that amount from the private sector and not ask Colorado's citizens to fund any of their product development costs!
-
The monorail would be prohititively expensive to implement, even if it did exist. Its promoters claim it can be built for about $25 million per mile which is $4 billion from DIA to Vail. That amount is $1,000 for every man, woman and child in Colorado! There are no municipal, county, state or federal funds available to support a venture of this magnitude. With investment per passenger far exceeding those for DIA or the E-470 tollway, no possibility exists for private funding. And, even worse, the promoter's estimates of $25 million per mile are far abelow the actual costs of recent monorail construction elsewhere. With the difficult mountain terrain to overcome and the complex guideway required for the suggested high speeds, this monorail's cost could easily double or triple the $4 billion estimate!
- Finally, there is absolutely no reason to pursue the monorail dream when conventional railway technology proven in thousands of operations daily throughout the world in mountain conditions similar to Colorado's can easily provide a sensible alternative to I-70's critical highway congestion. The railway solution can be implemented at a fraction of the monorail's cost and in significantly less time. A modern rail system will require no state sponsored research or development costs, will save energy and will have less impact on our precious mountain environment.
Vote "No" on the monorail!
