Sociological
study of heroine addiction in Lahore, is Mainly based on the inquiries made from
the addicts under treatment in various hospitals and clinics in Lahore. The
questionnaire was comprehensive enough to cover almost every aspect of
respondent’s life. The study has revealed that most of the victims were
influenced by psychological, social and economic factors. Besides, sexual
problems and other family feuds also compelled some of them to take refuge in
drugs.
Treatment
and rehabilitation efforts have not borne fruit. As soon as the addicts get in
touch with their previous peer group or mafia agents, they are offered something for smoking, panni
or sniffing. They seldom resist the temptation and consequently
relapse.
In
certain cases, it was noticed, that the addicts do realize that their habit of
addiction brought bad name of their family and they are themselves condemned in
the society. The future of their children is darkened but inspite of this realization
they do not muster courage to leave addiction.
In
the opinion of physicians, the sense of realization helps a lot in the treatment
of the addicts.
Many
dens are spread in different parts of Lahore, from where heroin is easily
purchased. It is apprehended that trafficking in drugs is not being checked with
strong measures. Time has come when the authorities and NGOs should make
co-ordinated efforts so that this social evil should be eradicated.
