Mesoamerican Society for Biology and Conservation (SMBC)

The SMBC is a non-profitable international organization which objective is to contribute with the promotion of the biology and conservation of nature, and being a bridge of communication among all people interested on these subjects. The society encompasses individuals and institutionals and institutions with similar objectives within the mesoamerican region and supporting countries.

The SMBC was founded by a group of Central American biologists who met at the Agua Azul Lago Yojoa Hotel, Honduras in January 14, 1996, with the purpose of promote the exchange and diffusion of the biological and cultural conservation of Mesoamerica. To accomplish its objective, the SMBC uses two means: a trimestral issue of the bulletin "Mesoamericana", which is completely free for members, and the organization of an annual meeting.

The SMBC consists of a Board of Directors, elected for a two years term and is composed of a president, vicepresident, secretary, treasurer and a national representative in each country of the mesoamerican region with United States and Cuba as supporting countries. The function of the Board of Directors is to distribute information (bulletins, bulletin boards by regular and electronic mail) and memberships and renewals.

The SMBC has carried out three congresses and four general assemblies and had published a total of 16 "Mesoamericana" bulletins. The I congress and II general assembly were held in Honduras (1997) with 223 people attending from all over the region. The II congress and III general assembly were held in Nicaragua (1998) with 300 people. The III congress and IV general assembly were held in Guatemala (1999) with more than 700 people attending the events.
