Today is the rousing conclusion of Jazz Aspen Snowmass. It's Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Cake, and Lucinda Williams. Robert Randolph and Band are from New York. I think I saw them before. I think he played with Medeski, Martin and Wood at some show. Anyway, it was nice to have some New York in the house. It gave me a little piece of home to smile about. Oh, and they totally rocked. There were four guys, and they all kept jumping up and switching instruments. They all played everything. And they did it well. And with style. Go see these guys if you get the chance, as well. They were fun. And damn high energy. Show these Westerners whats up. Cake was next. I like Cake. Okay, I liked Cake in 1996 or whenever they were cool. Since we are in Aspen, there are Aspeners there. The lead singer guy kept having a fit, because there was this VIP section up front with chairs and stuff. It was pretty empty, and the few people that were in it were all sitting down. Maybe a few of them were tapping their feet or something. The Cake guy made fun of them for rather playing golf or something. They played a bunch of songs from their new album. Sounded pretty good. If you want to hear tracks from their new album, go to their website, which I'm assuming is www.cake.com. I don't know that for sure, though. Anyway, you can check out the new album there. I think I liked a song called "Wheels." Yep. Then Lucinda Williams came out. I didn't know much about her. I think she was that country chick or something. Yeah, she was badass. Now, let's not get that confused with kick-ass. Frankly, she didn't impress me too much. I think the boy in front of me had special feelings for her. I couldn't see it. I said nice things about her because I thought if I didn't, that boy might cry. I almost believed me by the end of the night. She was alright. Some of the songs made me laugh. And yes, some of them even made me break out my phat-ass white girl dance moves. No, not the frat party ones. Just the Aspen ones. I will give y'all a tutorial on Aspen dancing a little later. Oh, someone told me I needed a cowboy hat. I'm not sure why. I guess that's just the kind of place that Colorado is. CO is the postal abbreviation for the state, by the way - just in case you were wondering. So, yeah, Lucinda Williams. The coolest thing, though, was that after 4 days of the music festival, I knew people in Aspen. The last day I felt like the mayor or something. "Hey Sara!" "What's up, New York?" Ha. Yeah, and I didn't initiate any conversation. People are nice around here. I think I'm gonna like it here... Or maybe that was Annie... |
