PHRASES
A
phrase is a group of words which form a part of a sentence, but does not
make sense on its own. A phrase has no finite verb but may contain Parts
of verbs such as infinitives or participles. There are several different
kinds of phrases; ·
Adjectival phrases describes nouns. The lady with long black hair is here. ·
Adverbial phrases do the work of an adverb, that is they tell us
how, when or where an action is performed. The cyclist rode with
great care
(how). We will leave at
noon (when). I caught the
fish in the pond (where). ·
Noun phrases do the work
of a noun, that is they name something. For example, riding a bicycle requires skill.
Because we can ask What requires skill? The words riding a bicycle can be
treated as a single noun. 1.Choose
