Love? A Privilege or a necessity? One of the plays with the theme of love is "Romeo and Juliet" written by William Shakespeare.
Virgil of Rome once said, "Love conquers all things. Let us too surrender to love" What Virgil is trying to say is that love is the
strongest force and that nothing else matters, and there is nothing they can’t do, because they are in love. I believe that these
words do relate to the play " Rome and Juliet", but only to the characters Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, however I disagree
with it’s relevance to the play.
"Love conquers all things let us too surrender to love" When Virgil said this in 70-19 B.C he didn’t have a play by an Englishmen in
mind, but non the less he was right on the nose with these to characters. In the lives of Romeo and Juliet love did conquer all. In
Act 5 Scene 3 lines 295-297. Capulet says to Montague, " O brother Montague, give me thy hand: This is my daughter’s jointure,
for no more Can I demand. Capulet says this after they find out that Romeo and Juliet are dead. Their death was caused by love,
which ended the long dispute between the Capulets and the Montagues. Friar Laurence gave a foreshadowing of that Romeo and
Juliet’s love will end their clash. Ion Act 2 Scene 3 line 86-88 Friar Laurence says to Romeo, " In one respect I’ll thy assistant
be. For this alliance may so happy prove, To turn you households’ rancour to pure love." What Friar Laurence is saying is that
maybe the two house holds will see how much in love Romeo and Juliet are that they will bury the hatchet. Although their love
didn’t change the family’s minds in the way they wanted it to, it still did change their minds, but at a risk. Love conquers all
especially Romeo and Juliet. Love conquered their hearts. From the time they saw each other at the Capulet’s party to when they
watched eachother lie in the presence of death. Their love never weakened it only grew stronger in time.
Romeo and Juliet were conquered by love, but not everything can be in the same effect. As well as the good love that is produced
there is also some bad in it. Love made Romeo try to find common ground with Tybalt. However at the time Tybalt and Mercutio
were fighting. Tybalt stabbed Mercutio in the hip going between Romeo’s arm and side. In a sense love did conquer, it conquered
Mercutio and put him to death. Love as well as pure and good it is known to be brings out bad actions in some people, such as
revenge. After Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo in anger and love seeks out revenge for Tybalt, which he does gain. Love takes what
it gives, like coming out even at the end of a poker game. Many people often say that people do different, unusual things when in
love. In Act 3 Scene 5 lines 197-202, Juliet talks to her mother about the marriage to Paris. She says, "Is there no pity sitting in the
clouds, That sees into the bottom of my grief? O sweet my mother, cast me not away! Delay this marriage for a month, a week;
Or, if you do not, make the bridal bed In that dim monument where Tybalt lies." In this dialogue with her mother, which her father
exited out of recently, Juliet is begging to stop the wedding and go against her parents even more her father’s words. This is an
unusual thing for Juliet, because she has always been one of those people that goes with the flow, but again she has been
conquered by love, so she is doing whatever she can to stay with Romeo. Everything is good and evil, even love, because without
evil we have nothing to compare to other things to tell us what is good.
Everyday many people ask themselves, "Love, is it worth it" Well many times more then non you’ll think it isn’t, which isn’t far
from true. In "Romeo and Juliet" there are plenty of incidents that must have made the characters question love and their
relationship. At the end of Act 3 in Act 5, Juliet is disowned by her parents. She is disowned, because she goes against their word
in marrying Paris. She then asks the nurse to coddle her in this, because she only goes against her father, for her love in Romeo.
As previously stated love can bring evil as well as it can bring good. Well evil came to Romeo when he was blamed for the death
of Mercutio by Mercutio before he descended into the unknown. Mercutio was one of Romeo’s best friends, but was his love for
Juliet worth the death of him. Not everything can have a happy ending.
Virgil of Rome was not all wrong when he said, "Love conquers all things. Let us too surrender to love" he was just ahead of his
time. Good and evil are in love as well as many things, so when love does conquer who knows the consequences.
