Message from our Patron:

YB Datuk Amar Dr. George Chan Hong Nam

Deputy Chief Minister and
Minister of Finance and Public Utilities and
Minister of Social Development
Sarawak

Congratulations to the Sarawak Music Society for organizing this open competition to select the Young Musician of the Year 1999. Such an exciting event for young musicians from the State of Sarawak could not come at a more befitting time for promoting greater cultural growth and development in our society as we approach the new millennium.

I commend the Sarawak Music Society for your determination and farsightedness in this desire to encourage our young artistes from different parts of Sarawak to better themselves and to provide them with a goal to work towards.

It is my hope that the Sarawak Music Society will continue in your fine efforts to scout and train more talented young Sarawak musicians and assist our State Government in our pursuit for excellence in music in the years ahead.

Message from our Chairman:

Yeoh Jun Lin

The idea of an open competition to whet the competitive spirits of so many music students in Sarawak, had long been in our minds. It was wonderful to see such an enthusiastic response from so many. While we applaud all the young artistes in today’s competition, we also want to spare a word for the teachers behind them, for the direction a musical spirit grows is very often determined by the nurturing hand behind them.

We thank YB Datuk Amar Dr. George Chan for his encouragement and support in getting this project off the ground. Our sponsors have also been very generous. The Young Musician of the Year event would not have been possible without them. Thank you also to the parents who have given such support and sacrifices of all who are playing tonight.

Music is such an opiate in this world. Everywhere we go, we are surrounded and touched by it. It is an extra dimension that we carry about us like an invisible aura as we go about our lives. Among us, there are few that hold the power to touch others with their gift. We hope that the Young Musician of the Year search will do its part in helping them along the way.

A TRIBUTE TO CHAN HUI LING

The late Chan Hui LingThe Kuching music circle was greatly saddened by the death of Chan Hui Ling on 2nd October 1997. She stood as one of Kuching’s best piano teachers and produced many students who have gone on to become professional musicians.

As a conductor, Mrs Chan contributed immensely to the music scene in Kuching with her involvement in the Sarawak Music Society choir as well as the Kuching Chinese Church Music choir. She led the SMS choir in a few greatly memorable Christmas concerts, the Mozart Bicentenary Concert, as well as the Opera Highlights concert in 1996. She was also very involved with various church choirs in concerts held in Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Australia.

Mrs Chan was a most devoted teacher who refused to compromise on standards. She would goad and prod her students to give their best because she herself always gave her best. She had an uncanny gift of coaxing her students to do things that they themselves did not know they could do. She set high goals for them and then went about helping them achieve these targets. In doing this, she was generous with her time and money, and she would be the first to applaud the genuine achievements of her students who had worked hard. Many of her students, especially those doing music professionally now, would agree that without Mrs Chan they would not be where they are today. She was an inspiration to all of them. One of the greatest testimonies of Mrs Chan was that many of her students came to have great affection and love for her, not only as teacher, but also as a friend.

In her short life, Chan Hui Ling has left an indelible mark on the music front in Sarawak. Her expertise in the music field was greatly sought after - as a teacher, conductor and adjudicator. She was an example to many, especially the countless students who came under her tutelage, and will be remembered with affection by all who came into contact with her.

It is with great honor that the Sarawak Music Society names the Challenge Trophy of the Young Musician of the Year after this inimitable lady - The Chan Hui Ling Cup.
