BACKGROUND

As the SDF-1 was making its 12 month to return trip to Earth, weapon designers with the UN Spacy carefully scrutinized the combat data from the continuing battles with the Zentraedi forces.  The original Destroids were designed with only preliminary information on the military capability of the Zentraedi military.  Several newer Destroid designs were created using the hard earned experience of the past 4 months. The need for a heavily armed unit capable of point defense from long range was obvious. The UN Spacy's Phalanx was capable of  long range defense of the SDF-1 while the other destroid designs were effective in short range defense. The Maverick began development in January of 2009 and the first Maverick rolled out in May 2010.

The LDR-04 Maverick was designed for medium range point defense on UN Spacy capital ships. The basic frame of the Phalanx was kept; however the exterior torso armor and missile launchers were changed.  In place of the massive 44 short range missiles mounted on either shoulder, several bigger missile launchers were added. Two medium range missile systems are mounted on either shoulder capable of firing 4 medium range missiles with 2 reload per launcher. Mounted underneath are six long range launchers each holding 2 long range missiles.  This gives the Maverick a total of 24 medium and 12 long range missiles.  For point defense and anti-missile protection a single 40mm auto-cannon was mounted on top. Although it may be inferior to the number of missile volleys when compared to the Phalanx, it is not inferior in sheer firepower.

By the year 2020 the UN Armed Forces had decided to fully embrace the Variable Fighter as its mecha of choice, leaving all Destroids with an uncertain future. With no upgrades and a general phasing out, Destroids such as the Maverick were either used for parts, targets at UN Test Centers, or decommissioned and sold to civilians, normally for demolition and construction work after some minor alterations.

Only a few branches of the UN Armed Forces still use the Maverick, the UN Army and UN Space Marines. As both are generally ground based combat units, they saw a need for large, heavily armored weapons platforms, and still employ the Maverick and other Destroids in front line combat roles. The UN Spacy also in some rare cases uses the Maverick for static defense purposes. However the Maverick is most often seen as part of Colony World Defense Forces Mecha Battalions.

WEAPON SYSTEMS:

  1. 40mm ANTI-AIR CANNON (1): A single 40 mm anti-air cannon is mounted on the top of  the Maverick. The AA cannon is primarily used for point defense against incoming targets can ranges less than 1000m. The Anti-Air Cannon has an internal ammunition supply of 600 rounds.

  2. SHULIN-2 LONG RANGE MISSILE LAUNCHER (6): The Maverick mounts three long range missile launchers in each arm as its main weapons. Each missile launcher holds 1 long range Shulin-2 missile. These powerful armor-piercing high explosive missiles are capable of destroying some mecha with a single hit. The Shulin-2 missiles also have thrust vectoring nozzles for enhanced maneuverability. Each launcher holds a single missile ready to fire with a single reload.

  3. HIP MOUNTED SHORT RANGE MISSILE LAUNCHER (2): Located on either hip, the launchers contains short range missiles for anti-aircraft purposes. Each launcher has 3 ready to fire missiles plus 3 reloads.

  4. ARM MOUNTED MEDIUM RANGE MISSILE LAUNCHER(2): Two medium range missile launcher are mounted on either arm. Each missile launcher holds six missiles ready to fire with 6 reload missiles for a total compliment of 12 MRM per launcher.

  5. HAND TO HAND COMBAT:  The Maverick is not designed to engage in close combat due to a distinct lack of hands or arms. The best that it can hope to do is ram, body block, kick or side slam with the missile pods. This is one reason why Maverick LDR's are normally held in reserve artillery roles as far from the enemy as possible and are given protection by Spartan's and Tomahawks.
