Pre-show Thoughts- Ok, the John McCain show 2 weeks ago was surprisingly good, and I’m hoping that this week’s will be even better since Eric McCormack is actually a comedy actor(he’s great on Will and Grace) I’m not sure if there will be a bush opening, there haven’t been any big Bush stories in the last week, so it’s hard to say. My guess is, there will be a sketch or two about the upcoming not-so-exciting midterm elections. Cold Opening-Rudy Giuliani Does Political Commercials- I thought they might do something along these lines, all in all this was a good opening, it was very topical. Hammond’s impression seemed even better than usual. At first I didn’t get the Hienrick Hemler joke, then I asked my parents this morning and they informed me that he was a Nazi General, so I decided that it was an incredibly funny joke. Nice way to start off the show. 8/10 Quote: “Hienrick Hemler is my hero.”- Darrel Hammond as Giuliani Monologue- This was one of the better monologues so far. Eric McCormack seemed really enthusiastic, and that’s always nice. I liked the “I’m not gay” bit, they gay guys in the audience were really funny. Really Decent for a monologue. 7/10 The Bachelor- Ok, I’ve never actually watched The Bachelor, but I still laughed at this really hard. We saw the return of Amber, the one-legged hypoglycemic, and personally, I was happy about that, but I could understand how the character could be annoying to some people. Maya and Rachel did a great job playing the pathetic losers that are always on these stupid shows. Eric McCormack was awesome, and so was Chris Kattan, for the first time this year. I also enjoyed the little commercial they stuck in there “Last chance Tuesdays” that was really clever. Great parody. 8/10 Quotes: “At least I have 2 self respects!”-Amy Poehler as Amber, “I thought about that question you asked me last night, and I do have a dog”-Maya Rudolph as, uh, I forgot her name, the blond girl. Party Games- This was a really great concept, and generally well executed, although it did get a tad bit annoying. I was impressed by how well Will Forte did, I think he’s gonna be a really good cast member. Rachel Dratch was funny, but again, got a little annoying. 7/10 Quote: “Who the balls put Felix Mendleson!?” Political Adds- I HATE those stupid negative adds, and I cant freaking wait until this stupid election is over, so to me, these adds were the highlight of the show. I’ve decided to just rate them all here instead of doing it throughout the review. I loved everything about these commercials, they were dead on parodies of the real adds. The whole “call him to tell him to stop telling us to call her” thing was brilliant. Thanks SNL for making these! 9.5/10 America Morning with Paula Zahn- Ok, I’m not a big CNN watcher, so I don’t think I got the full effect of this sketch, but didn’t matter, because Tina Fey was totally awesome. It’s so cool to see her doing other things besides update, it really showed how talented she is. I really liked Rachel Dratch’s character, that was hilarious, so was Chris Parnell singing. I guess this sketch was showing how friendly morning banter can turn into true love, or maybe Paula Zahn flirts with her co-anchors a lot, in any case, I liked it. 8.5/10 Quotes: “Are we in love?”-Tina Fey as Paula Zahn, “I’m just going to enter my report as if this were an actual news show.”-Amy Poehler as a pissed off correspondent Weekend Update- Uhh, this WU, was, um, interesting? It had some good jokes, but overall, definitely not the best Update. I liked the priceline.com joke, as well as the Christina Aguilera’s filthy hot dog wagon joke, that one was really good. I think my favorite joke was “the most German invention” one. And before I get to the crappy stuff, here are some other funny ones: Kevin Costner is still in boring condition, the lights melting David Guest’s forehead, and the “reading is the best thing to do at a Moby concert” was great. Ok, so what went wrong? First of all, Horatio Sanz’s Gene Shalit impression is great, but it went waaaaay too long, he and jimmy cracked up too much, and Jimmy seemed to not know what was going on. And, what was with the dancing? As Tina said “We’ve lost control” The Phill Collins joke fell flat, and I really didn’t enjoy the baby k rapper thing. Not an outstanding Weekend Update. 8/10 Quote: “Christina Aguilera’s filthy hot dog stand is still going strong”-Tina Fey Megaphone Trial- This was not such a great idea, and it went about 2 minutes too long. Will forte’s character was intended to be funny, but wasn’t, and the megaphone got annoying. The only good thing about this sketch was Erick McCormack’s facial expressions. Otherwise, very blah. 6/10 Joey Mack and the Fuzz- This was one of my favorite sketches of the night, I think Jimmy Fallon should do A LOT more sketches like this, rather than putting himself into situations where he laughs and blows the entire thing. Anyway, it really gave him a chance to display is impressionist skills, if you liked this sketch, go get his cd, “The Bathroom Wall.” I think this really proved that Jimmy is more than just looks, and having the DJ interview a candidate was a nice touch. I loved Sanji the intern. 9/10 Quotes: “You getting a lot of moonaki?”-Jimmy as Joey Mack, “Did you give him half off the moonaki?” Jimmy as the man in the box. John Hancock Insurance- This was a great commercial. I loved the things they put up on the screen like “Hobos are not nice and lovable.” Great for a time filler. 8/10 Quote: “What if you’re attacked by a mountain lion?” Jackass the Musical- I like Jackass the show, and I would definitely see the musical! I liked this sketch, it was a great concept. I liked how Johnny Knoxville and Steve-o were played by big Broadway stars. The only thing that went wrong was the panda being late to tackle Seth, otherwise, good sketch. 7/10 Quotes: “I’m partyboy and I like to dance, just get me out of these breakaway pants.” –Jeff Richards as “partyboy” aka Chris Pontius, “Like it or not I’m gonna pierce my butt cheeks together!”- Seth Meyers as a Broadway star portraying Steve-o Jive talk Lies- This wasn’t exactly funny, but it was really cool. This proves why Tracy Morgan should be kept on the show, he and Maya did an awesome job. I totally loved that music playing in the background. Again, such a cool sketch! 8/10 This show scored: 94/120 or 78% Post-show Thoughts- Eric McCormack was a great host, he was really into every sketch, and knew his lines, by far the best host so far. The episode on the other hand, was not quite as good as the last one. The highlights of the show were: The recurring political adds, America Morning with Paula Zahn(because Tina Fey was so awesome in it), Joey Mack and the Fuzz, and Jive talk lies. The weekend update was slightly disappointing, and several of the sketches were too long. As far as the musical guest, Jay-Z, I’m not a big fan of rap, but I thought it was great that he brought along Lenny Kravitz, and a live band, and it sounded like he was maybe getting back to some old-school rap. But I guess its no longer Beyonce Knowels its just “Beyonce,” but, whatever, I could care less what she calls herself. What I’d Like to See Next Week- Ok, the host next week is Nia Vardalos from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” I haven’t actually seen the movie, but the previews are pretty funny, and it has made like 400 million dollars, so hopefully she’ll be a good host. Uh, I don’t know what to expect for next week, but I’m hoping for a George Bush opening, I think Chris Parnell has been honing his impression for the past 3 weeks, so the next time we see it maybe it will be and improvement. Well, that’s about it, the only other thing I can think of is that I hope the WU is better next week. Well, that’s all, so until next week, I’m Kate, goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow! |
