Game 1: L 0-2
Player of the Game: Vince Cannistraro
Once again, the Book of Pan was unable to be translated. Writer Daniel Pan admitted that he was lifting dead car batteries for fun before the game and apparantly the batteries strained his biceps and his brain muscles, straining all his brain cells. With the translator out of commission, the Ice Transplants gave it their all way on Monday night, however they felt short by two goals.
Right from the start, the Delta Upsilion showed that they were the more experienced team. They had crisp passes; everyone on the team knew what to do, what position they had to play. On the other side, the Ice Transplants were confused on the ice. Everyone seemed to be falling all over the place. It seemed like when one person got up, one of their teammates fell down.
"I am not sure what Dan was doing before the game," said Vince Cannistraro. "I understand a person wanting to get strong, but lifting dead car batteries! Come on? He could have gone to IMPE and lifted weights there. What a fool!"
Dan agreed. "I was on my back about half the time. I guess the muscle I gain from lifting the car batteries was too much weight for my arms to bear. It caused me to constantly fall. Maybe my falling was due to the numerous acid flashbacks I was suffering...from the dead car batteries. However, I was happy that I was able to stop some plays, however, I must admit I had a good view of the ceiling. Did you know that there are no championship banners hanging from the ceiling? I must say that tonight, I was a freaking mechanic....always on my back. It doesn't help that you pelvis hurts. I guess the social security check I get in the mail each month doesn't cover the medical expenses from these injuries."
"I don't think it was due to the car batteries that affected Dan's balance. Personally I think, since he is from Arkansas, he was probably suffering from frostbite and gangrene all over his body, especially his ears, when he stepped into the ice arena" stated Stanley Wang. "He is used to warm weather! I don't know if they have an ice arena down there...well it didn't help his cause he went down and his skin was exposed to the ice. However, it was funny to see him cross check himself...now do you do that? Dan is pretty amazing....breaking the laws of motion?!?!? "
Goalie, Vince Cannistraro, kept the Ice-Transplants in the the first period, stopping 10 shots in that span, yielding no goals. Delta Upilson's right wing came close to scoring in the 3th and 4th minute of the first period, but Cannistraro stopped their shots from the slot with the tip of his glove. Delta Upilson outshot the Ice-Transplants 12-5 in that period.
A critical moment in the first period occurred when Delta Upilson's Michael Dahl was awarded a penalty shot at 6:00 of the first period. Ice Transplants defender Stan Wang was called for blocking. On the penalty shot, Dahl tried to blow the ball passed Cannistraro, but Cannistraro stared him down, causing his shot to go left.
"I'm not used to having that many shots but for the most part we played well," Vince said. "I was seeing the ball really well. I gave up a few rebounds so they had second chances because of that. We had some lapses in our defense, but those will be fixed as we play more."
Delta Upilison had a 8-6 edge in shots in the second period despite the fact that the score was 0-0. During the middle of the second period. Delta Upilsons' Mike Furey gave his team the 1st goal. Teammate Tony Turano got passed Daniel Pan and as he fell, he was able to swatted the loose ball over to Furey who was wide opened on the wing. He shot the puck past Cannistraro into a wide-open left side.
With a sense of urgency, the Ice Transplants started to attack more. Led by Victor Wang and Tim Ohara, the Ice-Transplants were able to generate some offense, getting past Upilson's defense with some nifty manuevers, which resulted in some quality shots. "Both of them had more energy than the sun*" Edwin Flores stated. "I guess that happens when you have your backs against the wall."
Unfortunately, Jack Koludrovic, (goalie) was up to the challenge, stopping all of them. With less than four minutes left, the Delta Upilson's caught Dave Yu out of position, and was able to take advantage. With James Furey hitting the his open teammate Cashel McLaughlin on the left wing, Cannistraro was able to cut off the angle, however, the ball slipped under Cannistraro's glove. By that time, a 2-0 lead with under four minutes left was almost unsurmountable.
."We found a way to win," McLaughlin said. "We've got some great leadership on this team and we're certainly pulling together at the right time of the year. We've just got to keep a good thing going here."
"I had fun," Tim Ohara said. "Tonight it was fun seeing the way the game was played and it was fun being part of it even though we had lost."
"Vince is a quality hockey player," Victor Wang expressed. "It's always nice when you have a goalie that is skilled and possesses cat like reflexes on our broomball team. He gave up two goals I'm sure he'd like to have back, but he also made some unbelievable saves. Hopefully he'll be healthy and help us out down the stretch."
Intramural Analyst Thomas Musick was not surprised when learned about Ernst Lamothe's trip to the Fashion Awards. "Lamothe has some serious issues" laughed Musick. "I know he is willing to spend a large amount of money to look fashionable but give me a break, in broomball? Who is going to impress, the other team? teh ref? He already spends hours upon hours picking what clothes to wear. The next thing is going to complain about how the ice affects his modelling stride? I think he believes agencies (modelling) are going to be there. SAD!"
