PRE SEASON ANALYSIS

GANGSTERS OF LOVE: Skipper David Yu

Strength:Offensive Line: The Gangsters of Love's "Holy Trinity" of Travis Muff, Greg Wallace, and Vince Cannistraro are very fluid and makes it look easy blocking for quarterback George Glekas. They are all light on their feet, never give ground and possess top athleticism and body control. All three have exceptional athletic ability, patient and poise. They possess good initial quickness and mobility and each understand blocking angles. They rarely blowsan assignment. They all have good lateral-slide agility. With these, they will prevent Glekas from taking more "hits" than Anna Kournikova's website.

Strength: Receivers: In terms of explosiveness, Wang, Joe, and Scharnweber rank among the top wide receivers in the league. Wang, known as "Flash" to his teammates, has tremendous quickness and is a real threat when he has the ball in the open field. But perhaps Wang’s greatest asset is his wide receiver smarts and instincts. Wang looks like a natural when playing the position; he has a great feel for coverages and knows how to get open. He also has an excellent set of hands and will rarely drop a ball.

Scharnweber, on the other hand, is the ideal wide receiver prospect from just about every standpoint. He has great size; he’s a tall wide receiver who is "built" really well. He has great speed and can blow by most defensive backs, but is also very quick in his cuts and can be a devastating open field runner. He has great body control and tremendous hands, and can make the juggling catches that seem impossible. (On an unrelated note, his great body control and tremendous hands stems from his days when he captained his school's shopping squad.)

Ik-ro "The Beast from the Far East" Joe will probably be the number three wide receiver. He lacks top height and speed for the position. But in terms of everything else, he is as good as it gets. He is a great route runner who is quick in and out of his cuts. He is a tremendous athlete who will make the unbelievable catch and go over bigger defenders to bring in the ball. And most importantly, he is smart, alert, field savvy and seems to have a natural feel for playing the wide receiver position.

Strengths: Hunger. Enough said. Individually, Vince Cannistraro and George Glekas can eat more than Michael Moore and Kristy Alley combined.

Weakness: Unfamiliarity: This team challenge will be how fast they can come together and get a feel for how the others on the team likes to play in FOOTBALL. Not trying to say they are "strangers" to each other but this team will need some time.

Weakness: Desire to sin. Or maybe lack thereof. I’m not questioning anyone’s heart but within the midst of all their talent, will they be able to play toward a common goal or will everyone just try to “get mine?”

Watch out for:

1) Defensive Linemen: One of the keys for the Gangsters of Love is to force their opposing quarterback to throw the ball on the run into the teeth of the good GOL secondary. To do that, DL Daniel Pan and David Yu must create a big explosion from "within" and flush the quaterback out of the pocket. Bill Harrington and Neil Kitchen are sideline-to-sideline performers who can make open field tackles.
2) George Glekas. QB George Glekas. He's healthy again and has re-established himself as the pint sized Joe Willie. He's going to be one of the league's bigger stars as the pure-passing star who'll grow into the David Yu offensive system more and more. He's poised and has improved his decision-making ability to go along with enough arm strength to make every throw at the intramural level. Gangsters of Love's is a passing offense so if Glekas isn't on, the GOL won't be either.
3) Vincent Cannistraro. He has a bullet, and the name on it is Kyle Plunkett. Rumor has it that he came to play Intramural Football for the sole purpose of "de-throning" [seeking revenge] the humble chemist [from fantasy football].
4)Leadership:What kind of influence will Captain David Yu have on this team? Will they be able to make great music together? Or will he have to serve red kool-aid and buy beer to win over this team? Again, time will tell.
5) Can Josh Stender play? Josh might not be on the team this year because of prior obligations [attending the 2003 Fashion Awards in New York City]. If he can't make it, who will fill his shoes? the name Travis Muff has been thrown around.
6) The refs: Will Charles Anderson or the infamous JACK, ref the Gangsters of Love's games and cost them a victory? Stay tuned.
