The Socialist Party welcomes the coming together of the political parties and groups who are forming the Alliance Against Nice. This will demonstrate the serious intent of the majority of “No” campaigners to fight a campaign highlighting the issues that are of major concern to working people in terms of the right-wing economic policy underwritten by Nice as well as the dangerous move to militarism of the EU and an EU armaments industry.
The fact that only 16% of the electorate say they do not understand the contents of the Nice Treaty is not surprising.
The Government and EU have utterly failed to spell out in concrete terms the implications of the Treaty. Instead, the Government information booklet is confined to dry and abstract formulations.
Complex proposals such as “Enhanced Cooperation”, the role of the Political and Security Committee and the underlying economic philosophy could be spelt out in
concrete examples.
The suspicion is that the Government doesn’t want to do this as many people might find the actual proposals explained in a very concrete way to be deeply disturbing.
