On the Merivingian...

Let me just say that all his talk on Cause and Effect got extremely tedious after a while. That aside, his character is rather complex.

What does the audience really know about the Merivingian? Well, to begin with the Merivingian is initially introduced as the program entity that possesses the Key Maker. So it becomes obvious in Reloaded that the Merivingian is a key player in the events unfolding. The Merivingian, or Merv as Trinity calls him, is one of the more despicable characters in The Matrix trilogy.

Characterized as a self-absorbed, power hungry, and cruel individual, the Merivingian appears to be dedicated to his own hedonistic vices. The man enjoys the ability to lord power over anyone around him. Few actually challenge him, which leads us to question what legitimate power, if any, the Merivingian actually has within the Matrix.

As far as his preoccupation with Cause and Effect, which can get pretty convoluted, I seem to remember that in his little speeches, the Merivingian makes it clear that Choice has no place in the world. If so, it follows that the concept of Free Will is most likely a moot point with the Merivingian. However, this is problematic, since the very fact that the Merivingian is so focused on experiencing the vice or pleasure of his choice proves that Free Will is a reality. If it was not, the Merivingian would be more focused on his purpose for power...at which point I am back to square one: the Merivingian's obsession for power over others.

OK, I'm still pondering this one...
