NOVEL OUTLINE
The one I wrote is the 2nd of 3. It takes place in a space craft hurtling though deep space to an unknown destination from a now destroyed earth. The third generation of passengers is about to be born and their education, socialization, and conflict resolution techniques are all explored in an environment that has to keep an account of every molecule of matter (but with unlimited energy). The theme is what it means to be different in a small community (about 1000 people over three generations - none of the original passengers/citizens survives). The main characters are different in that they are gay, not child-producers, and still involved with the need to interact with children. In a contrapuntal way, an albino (the remainder are a shade of brown that I think many people of the world also enjoy?) is born and he too has to survive a well-controlled community ethos where his difference is much more obvious than the gayness of our heros who are, by the way, of two different generations ( about 25 years apart in age). When I re-write, I am going to add a blind person too. Part 1 will be the launching of the ship with its original complement of pasengers, the intial rules concerning life on the ship (modified as seen to be necessary as time passes), etc. What kind of precautions are necessary as a modern arc is being built and staffed? What are the criteria for those to be saved? In terms of socialization, religious beliefs, other value structures, the relative roles of individualism, conformity, free-spirits, docility, etc.? Part 3 will have the ship's people on some suitable chunk of matter under observation by the beings there as we keep zoo animals. What does this do to the huma spirit? And what if the time frame used for communication between these creatures is so far removed from our own that communication is, essentially, impossible? Well there you have the general outline.(c) 1995 dbonyun@earthling.net
