Hi Mom
by Winnie Lim
The cemetery was silent. Even though it was just a few
feet away from the highway, there was nothing to be heard except
for the wind sighing through the willow trees.
A thick layer of snow blanketed everything in a white
cloak. Small bouquets of flowers lay on a few graves. A lone
figure walked through the cemetery, and stopped at a marble
marker under a leafless magnolia tree.
Jonny Quest knelt in front of his mother's grave and
brushed away the snow that had piled up at the base of the
marker. He sat back on his heels and read the inscription on the
stone that was already engraved on his memory.
RACHEL J WESTON-QUEST
1948 - 1990
LOVING MOTHER, WIFE, AND FRIEND
"Hi, Mom," he began. "I'm sorry I haven't visited for
such a long time. Things have been kind of, well, crazy. Big
surprise, huh." He grinned. "You know how it is, with Dad's
job.
"Oh, Mom, guess what! Hadji finally found his parents.
Well, his mother, anyway. And he turned out to be the Sultan of
Bangalore." Jonny smiled. "No, I am not kidding. He's a
real-life Sultan. Well, not right now, anyway. He's staying
here for now, to study up and get ready to be a real leader of
his people. Meanwhile, his mother's ruling in his place. And
Pasha -- you know, Hadji's foster father? -- he's the chief
advisor. But Hadji'll be going back as soon as he's old enough.
"I think Dad might be training Jessie up to take his
place as his assistant. You remember Jessie? Yeah, Race's
daughter. I told you about her, remember? She drove me here, in
fact. She won't let me forget that I still have another 4 months
before I can get my learner's permit." Jonny grinned. "But
she's really nice, and cute, and smart, a lot of fun, not afraid
of taking chances. She kind of reminds me of you." Jonny took a
quick look around before proceeding. Just in case, though, he
lowered his voice to a whisper. "I think I kind of maybe like
her." He blushed.
"Race is fine. Oh yeah, I found out his real name is
Roger. Did you know that?"
Then he remembered. Race hadn't been assigned to the
Quest family until after - He hurried on. "Bandit's still causing
havoc around the house. He'll be seven soon -- 49 in dog years
-- but he doesn't show it at all. You'll be glad to know he's
leaving your rose bushes alone."
He took a long, shuddering breath.
"I miss you, Mom. Dad does, too. He doesn't talk about
you, but I know he does." Jonny's throat tightened for a moment.
"Things haven't been the same since..."
He broke off, struggling for control. "The house still
feels so empty without you. Sometimes something happens that I
think, I've just got to tell Mom and then I remember, and it
still hurts."
A tear rolled down his cheek, leaving a cold trail.
"Don't worry, I'm taking care of Dad, make sure he eats
right, gets enough sleep. Someone has to take care of him,
right?" Jonny forced a grin.
He laid the small posy of wildflowers that he'd brought
on the grave. Then he got to his feet and rested his palm on the
cold marble for a moment, gazing up at the sky.
Jessie slid off the hood of the station wagon as Jonny
emerged from the cemetery gates. She met him halfway.
"Hey," she said.
"Hey," he replied.
"All set?" she asked, meaning, he knew, Are you okay?
"Yeah," he nodded. She looked into his eyes for
confirmation. He returned her gaze with a small smile.
"Okay," she said, patting his arm. She started to go
around to the driver's side.
"Jess?"
She stopped and turned around.
Jonny stepped up to her and hugged her tightly. A little
surprised, but pleasantly so, she returned his embrace.
"Thanks," he said as he released her. For everything.
"Sure," she answered.
As they got into the car, the willow trees whispered
again. A warm, sweet-smelling breeze blew past the teenagers,
ruffling Jonny's hair and rippling through Jessie's fiery mane.
Jessie sniffed the air. "Mmm. I smell - magnolias? But
where's it coming from?"
Jonny smiled. "Mom's just saying hi."
