The Bentilean mini-mag No. 5

13th March, 1992

SPECIAL SAVE OUR COLUMN EDITORIAL

WHEN, last week, The Advertiser didn't plop through my letterbox I thought, 'Ah, well, it comes most weeks, no doubt it'll be back next week'. But I was wrong.

A note from their Bentilee columnist, Mr. Derrick Woodward (5 Thornham Green), informed me that The Advertiser have decided to change their distribution -- to exclue the Bentilee estate!!

According to Bentilee librarian, Mr. John West, who contacted The Advertiser's distribution department, the decision was made, they say, because too many of their papers end up in Bentilee's hedgerows and not through the doors where they belong.

And they add that they've dropped Mr. Woodward's column because they feel that people outside the area wouldn't be interested in what was going on in Bentilee.

Try telling that to the students who use the
Willfield Open Learning &
Willfield-Queensberry Centres.

And with Bucknall and other nearby areas still set to receive The Advertiser, no doubt there'll be plenty of readers interested in the doings of the local schools, churches, voluntary groups, Priority Estates Project, and dare I suggest? community mags.

Indeed, with the small circulation of this mag, and the infrequent nature of the Bulletin, The Advertiser column provides a vital link to those interested in the estate, and I would hope that The Advertiser will continue to make some copies of their paper available to Bentileans e.g. at newsagents.

The above campaign was successful in so far as The Advertiser can now be picked up from selected outlets (e.g. Bentilee Library, the Willfield Centre), and the Bentilee column was subsequently restored.
