TO KEEP THE CANDLE LIT
By: Bob Bearden aka Thon
Our lives are so like the Candle of Life,
our souls dancing like a flame on the wick,
dancing as if the light were forever, unending,
as if the wick would never burn down, the wax
that is our bodies would never melt away.
Yet it is illusion, for the flame is so fragile,
so easily swayed by a breeze, so violently
twisted by a sudden wind, and oh so easy
to snuff out; a chance gust, and it is finished,
merely a puff, and we are gone
Leaving behind only a wisp of smoke,
however briefly, quickly fading,
a fragrant scent on the air to show that
we were, that we lived and danced the
Dance of the Candle Flame, for awhile.
And when we dance the Dance together,
as kindred souls on the same candelabrum,
all with our best intensity, we may light
the room that is our world, our reality,
and reveal, each to the other, the wonders.
How fragile the candles flame, how weak,
how suddenly it is gone, that we may
doubt if it worth the effort to keep it lit.
But to know the value of a candle,
one need only take it into a dark place.
