UUP Manifesto Introduction
your future
within the union
The UNION can best quarantee our economic well-being.
The UNION also offers the people the best prospect of peace and fair play because the UNION links us to a genuinely pluralist, liberal-democratic state capable of accomodating social, cultural and religious diversity.
As David Trimble said at the UUP Conference in October 1995:
"The United Kingdom is a genuinely plural state in which it is possible to be Welsh or Scottish or British. Similarly one can be Irish or Ulster and British as well".
The Constitution of the United Kingdom can foster a fair and proportionate system of local administration in the Province, and provide for the broader relationships which will be addressed in the Talks.
building team
The UUP seeks to build a Northern Ireland where all can live with equality under the law, free from the threat of physical harm because of political or religious views; free from the ever present threat of paramilitary violence.
The UUP is the only party from Ulster which is fully participating in the work of Parliament at Westminster. This work will continue however long the Forum lasts, and we believe that in the coming months the political significance of our Parliamentary Party will increase.
No other Unionist Party has such a broadly based membership as the UUP, and combined with the widespread geographical distribution of our support, places us in a unique position to represent the interests of the greater number.
and the talks
It is the intention of the UUP to attend the Talks on 10th June, where we will strive and endeavour to secure agreement with those who are committed to exclusively peaceful methods, and who have shown a willingness to abide by the democratic process.
The Party has a generous clear of Northern Ireland within the Union, as a place where people of all traditions can feel happy, comfortable and at home.
The UUP believes that Eire's illegal territorial claim over this part of the United Kingdom can best be resolved in accordance with International law. No country should engage in any activity which interferes in 'the sovereign equality, territorial integrity and political independence of States.' (Council of Europe - February 1995).
The Party will not agree to any set of proposals which would diminish or erode the Union. We will resist any suggestions which, objectively, would run counter to the best interests and wishes of the greater number.
The UUP will be seeking to restore the constitutional integrity of the United Kingdom. We remain committed to seeking an alternative to and a replacement of the 1985 Anglo-Irish agreement.
While Ulster Unionists will be vigorously promoting our case, we will also be listening to the views and concerns of others.
this election
is crucial
Up to 11 parties or groups will be seeking to obtain votes from pro Union electors.
This lunacy cannot continue without inflicting irreparable damage to the pro-Union cause. THE BEST WAY OF FRUSTRATING THIS PLOY IS TO GIVE THE UUP A MASSIVE AND RESOUNDING VOTE ON 30TH MAY.
This election is of crucial importance. The results will be carefully scrutinised. When all the votes are counted across the Province, any Unionist apathy will have the effect of exaggerating the strength of the enemies of Ulster, thereby weakening the pro - Union voice, both in the Forum and at the negotiating table.
This election is the most important since 1921; it is vital to maximise the pro-Union vote. As the future of Northern Ireland belongs to the people of Northern Ireland, WE URGE YOU TO SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SECURE OUR FUTURE WITHIN THE UNION BY VOTING:
