Imagine laying in a crib for two years. You can't walk or crawl. You lack the ability to hear or see clearly. Your fed by someone propping a bottle up. Occasionally the sharp sounds of fighting make it to your room. It is dark in your room, and hot, too. The smell of various types of drugs linger in the air. All of the sudden you're ripped out of that existence and thrown into a new one. There's lots of kids there and some one is trying to teach you how to walk. Then suddenly your thrown into yet another environment. One where people hold you and talk to you all the time. Where you're given all sorts of strange food to try. Where you learn something new every day.
Confused yet? Well now imagine that being the life story of a baby. Her name is Micheala. We call her Micki. She is our niece. She was taken away from her Mother when she was two. Micki is the most beautiful and brilliant little girl that I have ever known. In the year since she has been taken away from her mother Micki has gone from the equivalent of a two month old to about a 1 year old.
When she was taken away from her mother and placed with her grandparents her doctors said she was blind and deaf. At a recent visit to her doctor my mother was told to place Micki on the floor to see what she could do. In a matter of a few seconds she was out the door, down the hall and into another room. While on a visit to her neurologist they found out that she can hear, but they are not sure if she can understand. Whenever she goes to her physical therapist she just jumps right into whatever they want her to do. As a matter of fact, the physical therapist calls her "Little Smartie Pants."
Micki is a very happy little girl right now. She laughs all the time. When you do something with her she enjoys, like swinging her around she laughs. When you put her back down she holds her arms out for you to do it again. She gets joy out of the little things in life. She makes you want to be a kid again and remember the joys of childhood. Micki loves school. She always gets a big smile on her face when she sees the school bus coming.
Micki has made it a long way in the past year and is continuing to make tremendous progress. We have been praying for her for as long as we have known that she had problems. We now ask for all praying people out there to pray and ask the Lord for Micki to continue to grow, learn, and heal. The scars that were left on her brain are still there. We can only hope that it is the Lord's will for her to become whole.
Also, we are trying to adopt Micki. On August 18 there will be a hearing to determine wether or not her parents will lose their parental rights. If the decision is not in favor of her parents, then they will have 3 more chances to appeal. If they use those, but everything else goes right, then adoption proceedings will continue from there.
