spotlight on Richard St. Clair

You Never Knew

(c) 1995 Richard St. Clair

    You never knew
    what you could do

    You never knew
    what harm would swarm

    You never knew
    that hell would knell

    You never knew
    that I could die

    You never knew
    my shame that came

    You never knew
    my years of tears

    You never knew
    your smile defiled

    You never knew
    what love was of

    You never knew
    a child, this child

    You never knew
    You never knew

Flight in Jeopardy

(c) 1996 Richard St. Clair

I cannot help but think
that somewhere
somehow
in its candid camera
a little bird is watching me
and scoffing at my misery,
giving me no sanctuary or quarter
as I plummet again into a tailspin
though my wings are parallel to the horizon.

Talk me down, my self,
take me to a soft landing
before I crash.

What You Say with Your Eyes

(c) 1996 Richard St. Clair

It was done:

What was it we said and did
that made it seem as though
it had happened all over again
for the first time?

I could have let myself think
that it was all the same,
but I knew you'd know better.
I cannot even try to fool you,
though I can fool myself easily
without even trying.
You won't blink, won't flinch,
won't forgive with an indulgent
look of ironic cynicism...

That look of yours that sets me
free inside my chains
bores into me and vanishes,
and love remains in its wake.
