LAMENTATIONS
FOR TWENTIETH CENTURY MAN

Eloi, Eloi our minds are troubled with thoughts.
Why does it appear You have forsaken us?
It's been so many long centuries
Since the Word was first learnt.
         Terrible, terrible wars we've had,
         When will we ever learn?
         Why did you let them?
A terrifying holocaust looms ever so near,
Will you let that happen too?

Hatred and greed corrupts everything within sight,
They've grown so powerful through the centuries,
Can they no longer be controlled?
They reek havoc upon the meek and humble.
They yield their powers to the will of the evil one.

John perceived that the new Word was failing.
His patriarch's religion was crumbling all around,
         Being thrown to the wind.
He and others awaited Your return,
         Still we wait.
         Were John's revelations true revelations?
         Were they merely visions of
What John truly wanted to see?
         Still we want to see.

When Rome brought down the Temple walls,
Pompeii buried a city, cast itself into the sea,
         The sky darkened for days,
Sunrise and sunset red as blood.
Unmercifully she persecuted the young church.
         Is it just happenstance,
That she sits on seven hills?
Was John's vision really just hindsight?
Or did he not understand the Word?
         Or misread the signs?
         Or just what?

         For three thousand years
You walked with the chosen people.
Wonderous signs You performed for them.
         Prophets You sent them.
Did the Son of Man truly sense
That there would be no more?
         "Eloi, Eloi, lama-sa-bach-tha-ni."

For two thousand years it seems we've walked alone.
Being trialed and tricked by the evil one.
Why isn't he cast into the firey lake?

         Man was tricked into thinking
         Knowledge of good and evil
         Would be better.
Now that he has a choice
Why must it always be evil?
Will some future worldly master say,
         "Evil is no more powerful,
Only more seductive and quickly to flow"?

         Torture, genicide, murders, cruelty, abuse
         Exist without objection
         Pestilence, drought, famine
Occur at the whim of nature.
         What abomination did our forefathers
Commit to reap such wrath from God?
Can it be that we have transgressed
The new covenant as well as the old?
So terribly so that instead of seventy years,
         It's seventy thousand?
Will a remnant remain to return?

Is the whole of man to be tormented as Job?
Job could declare his innocence of wrong doing,
         But poor man cannot.
Is man caught in the midst of a super power struggle?
Good and evil, light and darkness?
To be tormented by sensing the light
         But haunted by the darkness?
Some of each generation read the signs of
Their time as signs of the latter days.
Is it because they seek an end to this madness?

A wealth of knowledge we've nurtured and grown.
But our lack of wisdom mutates it into ill fruit.
         Devices of destruction we create
In fear of other devices of destruction
         Created in fear.
Is there no sanity left in all of man?

We pray for peace and tranquility
         And always end our prayers
         with 'according to Your will'.
         Have we such little faith
That our prayers cannot move the least of hills?

         The prophets of old
They called for fire from the sky,
They called for wheat from a jar.
The least of things they asked for, You gave.

Our ancient forefathers with whom you walked,
They shook with awe and fear in Your presence.
Yet boldly pleaded that You do
What seemed right and just for the world.
Have we become such timid sheep,
That we dare not ask Almighty God
         For peaceful pastures?

What act of penance must we do,
To regain the favor of God?

The Word has had different meaning
         Throughtout the centuries.
Or has it been misused along with
All the other knowledge we've gained?
Persecuted the church was in the beginning,
Persecution of others the latter church did.
Jews and Heretics and others no doubt.
And oh the terrible, terrible inquisition,
All in the name of Christianity.
         Crusades against half-brothers and cousins
         Of the Belief,
Killing and destruction for the sake of...of...
         Of just what?

What purpose was served by soiling
         The Word with such acts?
Mudding the waters within which we
         Were directed to fish?
         Making explaining Christianity difficult.

Does being Christian mean different things
         For different times,
         For different generations,
         For different people?
Among all the doctrines, is it possible
To choose the One and Only Way?
Is the Way among any of them?
         Why such overwhelming odds?

         Even after all these centuries,
         Have we still not understood?
