no time for a long sermon this week. coming up this saturday i'll be performing live for the first time ever (well, excepting high school plays, etc) in glorious muncie indiana, a town so illustrious i can't remember if i've ever been there. i'm sure i must've at least once, perhaps back in high school when we were scouting colleges. if i have been there, the memories didn't stick. but they will this time.
it all started out when dr butcher met this guy from muncie while we were at a party in wisconsin this summer (yes, he lives an hour from us, & we met him 5 hours from here). a few months later he gets in touch about the idea of having a show in muncie with bad taste artists performing. we volunteered quickly enough; soon the bill featured all the current-day bad taste superstars: murkbox, dr butcher md, gabbist monks, stAllio!, & animals within animals. that was back in november, & with the exception of the guy himself (performing as unszene) that's the whole roster for the evening (there were rumors of attempts to get abelcain & doormouse, 2 milwaukee producers whose fame outshadows even ours, but i guess it didn't happen). it should be some experience, basically just our bad taste crew manning the decks or rocking it out live for the whole evening (6 30-minute sets, 5 by us).
it's curious that our first "major" gig is not here, in what is supposedly a major city, but in a college town (home of ball state, hands-down winner of the state "worst college tv commercial" competition, & a strong contender for the nationals) an hour away. i say it's curious, but it's not odd considering indianapolis. the live music scene here is pretty dead. all the clubs that were once the hub for live music now feature regular '80s dance mix nights. we get the big-name arena acts, the *nsyncs & billy joels, occasional raves, & there are a few local rock or punk bands (even a good hip-hop act, the mudkids) that get work. but very little in-between. the one time i can remember hearing about an event in indy that would have music remotely like what we play (noisy, crazy electronics), we went to the venue where it was supposed to happen & it was a ghost club... no cars or anything.
so anyway, i don't have lots of time to blow on writing sermons this week: i'm performing in 2 different sets saturday night, & i have to prepare. anyone in the area who feels up for some noise, hard beats, & all-around dark goofiness is welcome to attend; admission is $3 & i have reason to believe it's an all-ages venue (though i don't know for certain). i will leave you now with the spam flyer that i sent out just last night.
