THE FOOL

the fool stands in the rain
hoping that this time love will appear
watching the couples go by hand in hand
stirring jealousy, envy,
and finally appreciation
wishing the unnamed duos the happiness
that has eluded him for thirty years
since that time he left
her standing on a corner in the rain
nobody stops to talk to him
smiles are directed the other way
chilled by the steady downpour
one more hour, for how many times
praying to a god
he is not sure he believes in
his prayers are finally answered
but the fool waits on the wrong block
