Hemingways Code Hero
The character of Santiago adheres to a set of values Hemingway unknowingly created. This set of values is called the heros code by literary critics. Underline or otherwise make note of the following values which Santiago follows:
- Death is final.
Because there is no afterlife, Hemingways characters lived life to its fullest, often flirting with death at the same time.
- A man must always be brave and dignified.
How does Santiago act during the time he battles the marlin? The sharks? What emotions is he feeling while experiencing these ordeals?
How does he react to the destruction of his prize?
- Since death is final with nothing more afterwards, the things which make up life must be enjoyed.
What specific things does Santiago enjoy?
Why does he enjoy these things?
Why does Santiago refer to a famous sports legend so frequently?
