Flaming Lips/ Beatles similarities

Discovered by yours truly, Matt Taylor!

  • Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" says, "...wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door"; Flaming Lips' "The Ceiling is Bendin' " says, "They've got all these Vietnamease heads stuffed into jars"
  • The Beatles' "Happiness is a Warm Gun" says, "Mother Superior jumped the gun"; The Flaming Lips' "Maximum Dream For Evil Knievel" says, "Evil Knievel jumped the gun" (Also, the Flaming Lips have a song called "Five Stop Mother Superior Rain")(Plus, "Five Stop Mother Superior Rain" makes a reference to John Lennon.)
  • The Beatles' "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill" says, "...so Captain Marvel zapped him right between the eyes"; The Flaming Lips' "The Spontaneous Combustion of John" says, "...like the first time Captain Marvel zapped him right between the eyes"
  • The Flaming Lips' "Can't Stop the Spring" has an uncredited orchestral sample; The Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" does too.
  • The Flaming Lips' "Everything's Explodin' " contains a sample of The Beatles' "Revolution 9"
  • The Flaming Lips' "Love Yer Brain" ends with a looping sample of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows". (Also, the Flaming Lips' songs "Love Yer Brain" and "When Yer Twenty-Two" use the same spelling of Yer as the Beatles' "Yer Blues".)
  • The Flaming Lips' "Hell's Angels's Cracker Factory", "Ode to C.C. (Part I)", "U.F.O. Story", and the introduction to "Maximum Dream For Evil Knievel" are avant-garde sound collages like the Beatles' "Revolution 9".
  • The Flaming Lips' album Hit to Death in the Future Head uses tape loops, like many Beatles songs.
  • The Flaming Lips' "Michael, Time to Wake Up" is a novelty track that seems to take up album space, but still appear amusing. The Beatles' "Wild Honey Pie" does the same thing.
  • The Flaming Lips' "Hari-Krishna Stomp Wagon (Fuck Led Zeppelin)"'s first part of the title swipes the Hari-Krishna movement of the Sixties. John Lennon did the same thing in "I Am the Walrus" by swiping at it in the lyrics and by including a recording of a mechanical voice chanting the Hari-Krishna mantra in the latter part of the song. (However, George Harrison was a follower of the movement.)
  • The artwork of Oh My Gawd!!!...The Flaming Lips includes a few pictures of the Beatles. It also includes pictures of Bob Dylan and Marilyn Monroe, who were also on the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. If you look closely, there are small pictures of nude women on the cover of Oh My Gawd!!!...The Flaming Lips. There are a few in the linear notes of The Beatles ("The White Album").
