The Walk Home

She began to undress as soon as she got off the bus. She was wearing white high-heel sandals to match her two-piece dress. Although pretty, the heels were uncomfortable to wear on a long walk. Some of her friends at the office wore tennis shoes with their skirts, but she considered them unprofessional-looking; others wore them only for the commute, but she did not like to carry shoes around in her hand bag, which was heavy enough already.

Her over-the-knee nylons had big holes under the toes, so she didn't really care if they got damaged walking on the sidewalk; they would be thrown away when she got home in any event.

It was a hot day, and the sight of the sprinkler brought a promise of a little relief. She let the water splash on her stockings for a couple of minutes, pulling up the hem of her calf-length dress to let the water soak her lower legs. Anyone watching her would have also seen the lacy hem of her slip.

A few minutes later, she passed through a small park, covering perhaps a quarter of a city block. She stopped for a moment at a point where a hedge blocked most of the view from the street, leaving only her head and shoulders showing. Nobody could see her take off her slip or roll it up and place it in her bag. She quickly continued on.

Several minutes later, she stopped at another park and began to unbutton her top, revealing a sports bra underneath. Anyone expecting her to take off the bra would have been disappointed, as her next move was to remove the top and put on an athletic T-shirt that she had kept in the bag.

Just before she left the park, she pulled out a pair of denim shorts from her bag and stepped into the ladies' room. She was still wearing the skirt when she came out.

Her ex-husband, punctual to a fault, was waiting at the intersection when she crossed. He gunned the engine in the car as she began to cross. Now, he thought, would be the chance to eliminate having to pay so much alimony. A little hit-and-run with a stolen car (which would be returned long before it was even reported stolen), and nobody would know it was him.

His ex-wife pulled up her dress well above her knees as she started across the street. Two cameras and a video camcorder shot the attempted hit-and-run. The ex-husband was soon caught and sent to jail for car theft and attempted murder. The ex-wife was indeed hit, but suffered only a twisted ankle and a few bruises. She had made sure that her crossing of the street had attracted enough attention.
