Birth Doula Services
My name is Allison Runnalls and I work in the Lower Mainland in British Columbia, Canada as a Birth Doula. I have been trained through Douglas College and DSA (Doula Services Association) and have been working as a doula for 10 years now in Vancouver and the Upper Fraser Valley.
For those of you who don't
know, a Doula is a professional labour assistant or "birth coach". The word "Doula" comes from a greek term that once meant "maid-servant" (servitude out of love, not obligation) but is now taken as "a woman with experience who helps other women". Personally, I feel that the former definition was probably more accurate :o)
I have worked with many women of different ages and backgrounds in the four years I have been in this field, and have had experience with VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesaerean Section), Bi-polar clients, Pre-eclampsia, breech vaginal deliveries as well as emergency C-sections. Most of my clients have been "high risk" or first time parents and all have had sucessful, positive birth experiences.(yes, even the emergency c-sect!)
I believe that caring, consistant labour support is the key to a positive birth, and you can read my write up on the "Value of Labour Support" here.
In the next few years, I hope to be attending Midwifery Training in UBC Midwifery program here on the West coast. The importance of being able to provide this service to the families here has quickly become the heart of "normal" birth practice.
