McGregor Family History from the Time of the Arrival of
Alexander McGregor in the United States
Our research takes us back to Alexander McGregor Sr., one of the sturdy
Scotchmen who left his native Highland Country late in the eighteenth century
to immigrate to Antietam, Maryland. In 1791 he bought a farm of '196 acres for
196 pounds, 5 shillings' in St. Claire Township near Bedford in Bedford Co. PA
Alexander was a millwright by trade and a farmer. We learn from his
Will dated June 12, 1826 that his wife's name was Ruth and that they had the
following children: John, Hannah McDonald, Daniel, Margaret Ann Hancock,
Mary Clark, Alexander Jr., Levi, and Elijah.
Alexander's son Daniel was born in Bedford County. He learned the
Carpenter trade and came to Western Pennsylvania with his wife Catharine
Sink, settling first in Indiana County, where he remained for four years.
He later moved to Porter Township, Jefferson County. Here he purchased
eighty acres of timberland upon which he built a log house and barn, devoting
the rest of his life to the development of this property, which is still
owned by a McGregor Descendant.
Daniel spent his latter days with his son Levi in Punxsutawney and died
there in April 1880 in his 89th year. He was a member of the Baptist church,
but his burial site is not known. A marker records the resting-place of his
Wife Catharine in Little Roundtop Cemetery at Georgeville, Pennsylvania. She
'departed this life' December 23, 1869 at the age of 76. Children born to
Daniel and Catharine Sink McGregor were: Levi, Daniel, Mahlon, William, George,
Margaret, Lucinda, and Catharine.
Mahlon (1814-1875), a son of Daniel and Catharine Sink McGregor, was
born in Bedford County and was about three years old when the family moved to
Indiana county. He grew up there and on the Porter Township farm. On reaching
Manhood, Mahlon married Margaret Chambers, the daughter of James and Sarah
Pounds Chambers. Margaret died on February 6, 1845 at the age of 27. She
left two children: James (1840-1915) who has descendants still living in
Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Daniel Clark, our grandfather, who was born on
June 3, 1842 at the Porter Township farm.
Mahlon's second wife was Margaret McClelland, the daughter of James
McClelland of Indiana county. After the second marriage, Mahlon moved from
the Porter Township farm to Ringgold Township, Jefferson County. Later he
bought a farm and moved to Indiana County. Still later he operated a store
in Hamilton, Pennsylvania. He sold the store and bought a farm near Dayton
in Armstrong County. At the present time, the farm is under the management
of his descendants, the Wilson family. Mahlon died at this farm on June 30,
1875, leaving his widow and four children by his second marriage: Margaret,
Robert Marshall, Elizabeth Catherine, and Scott.
Daniel Clark, our grandfather, the son of Mahlon and his first wife
Margaret Chambers, was eighteen months old when his mother died. He was
reared by his paternal grandfather Daniel on the Porter Township farm.
In 1862 he married Elizabeth Catherine Adams, the daughter of Richard
and Martha Christena Kennedy Adams, widely known and respected pioneers of
Porter Township. Elizabeth Catherine Adams was born on June 30, 1842, just
27 days later than Daniel Clark. The Adams and McGregor families were close
friends and when they visited back and forth, Daniel and Elizabeth often
rested in the same cradle as babies.
For a year after their marriage, Daniel and Elizabeth remained on the
Porter Township homestead, operating the farm. Then Daniel bought 70 acres
from Levi McGregor, whose property joined the homestead. Daniel and
Elizabeth moved to the new location.
Two years later Daniel bought the old homestead and moved back to the
site originally settled by his grandfather Daniel. With judicious management
he put the farm in excellent condition. He built a new large farmhouse and
barn, as well as other buildings. He also acquired other property, totaling
in all over 200 acres, accumulated by thrifty and intelligent decisions as
the opportunity arose.
Daniel was a capable business man and gained the confidence of his
fellow citizens in such a way that he was given public trust. He was over-
Seer of the poor for six years, and a school director for fifteen, the duties
of both positions conscientiously performed. He was always faithful to any
duty he undertook and justly merited the high regard in which he was uniformly
held.
Daniel was a Republican and during the Civil War, a Union sympathizer,
leaving his young wife and small children to serve in the army. He enlisted
in February 1865 in Company C 78th P.V.I. and remained in the service until
the end of the war.
His wife Elizabeth died on December 27, 1898 at the age of 56. Her
death was a great blow to Daniel, for their marriage was a truly happy one.
They shared all the family responsibilities and decisions and were constant
companions. Both were kindly and compassionate. Their home was a haven for
anyone with a problem. Many came seeking guidance and found comfort, food,
and shelter.
Daniel survived Elizabeth by almost nineteen years. He died near the
age of 75 on May 13, 1917 at the Porter Township farm. The children of
Daniel and Elizabeth, in order of their birth, were:
