Detail of LLICLLA (Woman´s Mantle) late
18th-early 19th century. Alpaca wool. From Qero, Province of
Paucartambo, Cusco. A ceremonial piece, complementary warp woven
with bands of warp pattern displaying the anthropomorphic
"Chuncho" (jungle warrior) Pallay -also referred to as
the "Inca Pallay". The accessory bands of Pallay at
each side are Tocapu derived designs. The plain warp weave
"Pampa" sections (Red at right and Black at Left) are
woven of alternate 3 mm. strips of right and left-spun thread
herringbone ("Lloque-Pana" in Quechua) a characteristic
of magico-religious weavings. An exceptional textile.
