A ritual bath is a necessity before starting any Magickal rite. This is not a cleansing bath with lots of soap, this is simply a submersion into a bath of fresh, clean water to which has been added special salts, oils or herbs. Its an attunement of the body; the vibrations of the treated water blend with the physical form to reach a level of harmony. As mentioned, sea salt is the basic additive, and will always suffice is nothing else is available. Where possible, use bath salts, oils or herbs prescribed for the particular ritual. |

You will have to mark the candles with names or properites for some of the rituals. To do this you will use an awl, an engraver, or you can use a pointed crystal. You will also be using incense in these rites. It was an ancient belief that the smoke of the incense carried one's prayers up to the gods. It is also a fact that incense burning creates a certain atmosphere, or "vibes," which add immeasurably to a Magickal ritual. Different incenses are recommended for different rituals, but these are only suggestions. If you have a favorite, or are unable to obtain what is suggested, then go with whatever you've got or what you prefer. Some rituals call for the use of poppets, or cloth figure made to represent a person. The color of the cloth used for the poppet is determined by the birth date of the person represented. (See Astral Colors) Cut out two shapes and sew them together, leaving just the top of the head open. Concentrate on the person, or type of person the poppet represents, while cutting and sewing. Now stuff the poppet with appropriate filling which will depend upon the specific ritual. (When in doubt use rose petals.) Sew up the head. On the body the sun, moon and rising signs can be painted. You can also add the name of the person. The poppet should be consecrated at the start of the ritual. Until then, wrap it in a clean white cloth and store it away. There will be occasions when you will use photographs, letters and other objects in your rituals. If this is the case, they will be placed inside a small magickal bag called a placket. You can make these by sewing two squares together and leaving the top open. |
