Ruth's Poetry

 Mirage

Well, I know that I just got here, yet I'm wondering how I did.

Was it something that I dreamed of, or something that you said?

Or was it just the lightning that's been flashing in my head?

Well, I'm not sure how I got here, but I know I have to leave.

I got in this situation, and now no one will believe

That there is no guilt or negligence, no intention to deceive.

This life plays dirty tricks on us.

It brings us to our knees,

Breaks our hearts in pieces

And laughs at the debris,

Hands us gifts of insight

And then snatches what we see.

I thought I saw a light in you that brightened when I spoke.

I guess that I was dreaming; it was gone when I awoke.

And now there's just this darkness that you're wearing like a cloak.

I don't know how I got here,

and I know that I must leave.

But there really was no negligence.

There was no one to deceive.

You were gone before I got here --

You just forgot to leave.
