Chapter 3
New lives

Brandon laid on the bed of his new apartment. He had spent the entire day looking for one and he had just now gotten settled. Tomorrow would be spent looking for a job. But for now he was just going to take easy and enjoy the rest of the evening. He glanced at a nearby alarm clock. 8 p.m. Maybe I should call my grandparents to let them know I made it, he thought. He fell asleep before he could.

Alex wiped the kitchen counter. It had been a very long and boring day. He went to the rec room and sat on the couch. Then the phone rang and he picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Alex? This is Monica. Can you do me a favor."
"Not right now. I'm busy." Monica laughed.
"Right. You're probably sitting in the rec room doing nothing. Am I right?" Alex was silent for a moment.
"What can I do for you?" he responded.
"I thought so. I just want you to drop me off at the mall."
"I'll go in with you if you want."
"Are you sure?"
"Hey, I don't have anything better to do."
"Fine, I'll see you in a few minutes."
"Yeah, bye." Alex hung up.
It didn't take long to get to the mall. There, they went to various stores. Now Monica was in a candle store. Alex hang around the entrance while Monica shopped. "I see your girlfriend took you shopping too." Alex turned and saw a browned haired guy about his age.
"No. Monica's just a friend. Do you have a girlfriend?" Alex asked.
"Yeah, Lisa. She's in that store too."
"Do you like candles?"
"No. But my girlfriend sure does." Alex grinned.
"Yeah, what is it about girls and candles?"
"Who knows? I prefer sports." said the browned haired guy.
"Yeah, especially football. Footballs the best." Alex looked at him.
What's your name?"
"Brian."
"I'm Alex. I'm going to West Peak Collage."
"Really? So am I!" Alex smiled again.
"Do you have a roommate?" He asked.

Brandon hang up the phone. He had just called his grandparents. Seems like everything is going fine over there, Brandon thought. He looked at his watch. I'm going to be late for work. He picked up his jacket and went out the door. He locked the door behind, headed for the stairs, and almost collided with someone else.
"I'm sorry." Said the girl, "I wasn't looking where I was going."
I'm Tracy Biser. Are you new here?"
"Yeah. I moved in a few days ago." Tracy smiled.
"I knew it. I know everyone on this floor. I moved in with my husband a few months ago."
"You're married?" Brandon asked.
"Yeah, our room is down the hall. If you need anything, just knock."
Tracy headed toward her apartment. Brandon watched her, then left.
