R.E.M. - Monthly Article - R.E.M. Exhibit
Search for artists!!!

The R.E.M. office gives their fans the opportunity to create a visual art exhibit featuring R.E.M.!

For this international exhibition, likely to take place in Athens, GA in 2001 or 2002, we are still looking for some motivated and talented fans from all over the world.

The exhibit's idea is to have fans express why they want to have R.E.M. in your lives, why they like specific songs, or how R.E.M. had had a positive influence on their lives. In short, it will bring R.E.M. from the stereos on a (public or/and private) wall!

The show will be the most successful if it is not only interesting for fans, but for non-fans, art collectors and art professionals as well. Showing 'only' R.E.M., it is still about a late 20th century phenomena called stardom and why it makes sense to some people. Having this link to the present, it should become a rather interesting event for the contemporary art scene.

With this quality it could also be an excellent starter for a junior artist's career and contribute nicely to any established artist's resume. In order to make this possible for each and every one of the participants, we request all of the participants to be serious about their art and their careers.

If you have created at least a small body of work already, are able to come up with some pictures on R.E.M. within the next 2-3 years and are serious about what you do, then tell us about you now and don't miss this fabulous chance to do a fun, extraordinary project that will give you:
- special friends who are artists like you and share your love for R.E.M.
- an amzing, fun and creative way to extend your artistic abilities and express your feelings towards a reason to get up in the morning
- possibilities to extend your portfolio with exhibition dated and press coverage

Contact Dietke at dietkeACB@gmx.de - no matter if you are a bit or very seriously interested. We are anxious to hear from each of you!

PS: We are also looking for a current of alumni DECA -An Association of Marketing Students- participant to help with planning and promotion!

R.E.M. EXHIBIT

- as in January 2000 -

Mission

To organize a visual art exhibition on the music group R.E.M. and all it signifies, that will help young artists to start a career in the field of visual art and contribute nicely to any established artist's career.

Vision

§ To make an exhibit that offers a statement about the significance of one of today's most prominent phenomena: "pop groups" and stars. Thus it should be of an interesting content for fans, non-fans, art collectors, art professionals, and anybody who is interested in present day's culture.
§ To express gratitude towards R.E.M.

Setting

The exhibit is going to take place in the Athens Center for International Art (ACIA), Athens, GA, USA. The show will be opened between September 2001 and June 2002.

Organization

The organization is directed by Dietke Bergmann, an 18 year old fan from Germany. However, it is hoped that as many fans as possible from all over the world will sign up and contribute in any way they can.
R.E.M. officially approved of the idea of this exhibit and are staying informed about it. Thus, this is a 'legalized' project.

Criteria for choosing the participating artists

- The show should present artist which are working in different styles from each other. Once somebody in accepted, she or he cannot be excluded from participation anymore. Chances of being chosen, however, are the biggest when your style is not already represented.
- The work of the artist's should have the certain 'something' that will make people look at them again and again and let them think about them long after they looked at them.
- Anybody who is submitting art work should be represented in exhibitions regularly or be interested in starting a career in the arts.
