These are the poems about China, published in July 1998.
The Lake
I don't want to shoot the moment
I want to get it all inside of me
to keep for all eternity
You know who you are, for whom this is intended:
The best part
of my visit to China
was having met you
Funny . . .
you are not even Chinese!
China . . .
you are here
in my heart
. . . forever!
I belong here
and I feel sad
to leave
new friends
open people
I got pearls
that remind me
of the tears
of shame
I shed
in Shanghai
I learned
to give
wholeheartedly
with both hands
and to receive
wholeheartedly
with both hands
in China . . .
I see
the Great Wall
in my mind's eye
eternally
enchanting
reaching out
to forever
I walked more slowly . . .
I looked more closely . . .
I listened more intently . . .
in this ancient
enchanted
enduring
world
