East Coast Chapter formed!
Hi Ana,
. . .
By the way, here is a social column
scoop for you. I shall be having
dinner with the Mangonons tonight in New York City. We
are being joined by
Ling Lacanlale and Ester Rimpos-Detres. We would probably
be joined too by
Rodolfo Victorino who Ling told me likewise live in the
area. So, we are
also having a mini reuninion here. Why tonight? I told
Frank and Pat that
I am leaving for Manila tomorrow morning; and tonight
(They won't be in
New York till today) is the only time for us to gather
if it has to happen
during this particular trip.
I shall give you kwento later although I am sure Ester,
Ling or Pat (Note
that the names were listed in alphabetical sequence to
be socially
correct) shall be better and prompter in reporting the
event to you.
Elmer

Subject: News Flash - Mini Reunion in New York Did Take
Place
Hi Ana,
I can't write you a long note now since I have not even
finished packing
yet. I got home from NYC around half past midnight. Anyway,
here is a
quick blow by blow account:
1) I arrived at the Philippine House on 5th Ave
New York (between 45th
and 46th Streets) at around 6:30PM Tuesday, May 12th
2) After inquiring about Mrs. Lacanlale, I was told to
proceed to the
5th floor that serves as the offices of the Philippine
Mission to the UN
and lo and behold: Ling was already entertaining Ester
Rimpos-Detres and
Rodolfo Victoriano.
4) After several more minutes, the elevator opens to discharge
Ruth
Monseratte-Villareal accompanied by husband and youngest
daughter.
Philippine flag. Akyat derecho sa 5th floor at nandito
na kaming
lahat.".....Ling
7) Hintay, inip uli. Bukas uli ang elevator at dumating
si Frank at Pat
Mangonon kasama ang anak na si Rea. Video coverage. Kuhanan
at Rodolfo.
10) Decided on Fridays about two blocks away...tuloy na
gabi?" " Hindi
pa. "Well, you've got to see it."
Squarena. Panay
kodakan na naman against the neon signs of this famous
NYC landmark.
Tsismis, halakhakan, turistang turista ang dating.
14) Its past 11:00 PM, time to call it a day. May pasok
15) Hug dito, Hug doon, see you again, goodnight, goodbye....
16) Si Ling, Rodolfo, Frank, Pat at Rea, sabay sabay naglakad
papuntang
Penn Station. Si Rodolfo, doon sasakay ng subway. Iyong
iba, lahat
sasakay ng LIRR papuntang Long Island. Pati iyong titigilan
nina Frank,
on 46th between 5th
and 6th Ave)
Katok, bukas
ng pinto ang asawa.
"Here is Ruth, safe and sound". Babayan uli, till next
time.
20) Drive na pauwi, arrived home around 1 1/2 hours ago.
Ana, I am sure above is not as good as your blow by blow,
but it is the
best I can do.

Hi folks! O, eto naman ang dagdag pa ni Ling about the
mini-reunion.

Ana,
mini-renunion namin
kagabi. Bilib na ako sa kanya. Sabi niya ako na raw ang
bahalang magbigay sa
iyo ng full account but after reading what he has sent
you, there is nothing
more to add except the details of the tsismis which most
of you already know.
We were just updating the "New York Prep 65' Chapter"
on what had happened in
the past reunions in Manila. Pat was complaining that
you guys have not been
getting together as frequently as when I was there. While
it makes me feel
good to think that I was the reason for the frequent
"reunions" (ehem) , I
wish you would continue the practice. You can't imagine
how good it feels to
see classmates you've not seen in a while. Pat will tell
you my story about my
Mother's Day. Kalog din pala yung asawa ni Ruth. He won't
have difficulty
blending with our batch dahil pareho ang brand ng humor!!!
(I am still at home because nga I came home at 12:30
a.m. Hinatid ako nila Pat
sa bahay ko. Their friend picked us up at the train station.
)
If you have any information on the whereabouts of classmates
who are in the
New York area, pls. tell me so I can form a chapter here.
By the way, tell
Francis Paco that Ester has kept her ballet dancer figure
and definitely,
hindi amoy lupa! Siya yata ang unang nag-declare na may
crush kay Ester nung
first year tayo. It was really a good evening.

Hi Ana B,
Thanks for the exciting news! I'm happy for Ling
and the group. That's the
spirit. You're right, natuloy ang planong reunion
sa NAmerica! Sabi nga ni Elmer,
seryosohin natin ang malakihang reunion pa, yun bang
tipong majority ng dadating
dito ay galing Pilipinas! At pag-nagkataon, pati
sina Debbie in Italy and
Francisco in Singapore, sasadya lang para dito, di ba?
Daddie says she'll make
sure this will be in the agenda of the LA reunion.
So her group, plus ours in
Toronto (we're now a committee of two families: Efren's
and mine) will plan with
Ling's branch in New York, di ba "power groups" na iyon
para matuloy talaga ang
plano? I have so much faith in our class, wherever
we are -- we just don't talk
and laugh -- we make exciting things happen! Ang
dami dami nang nag-umpisa lang sa
balak at biruan, pero natutuloy!! Indeed, we're
dreamers and doers ...
Meanwhile, tama si Ling -- it's best to keep the
fires burning in Manila -- the
Melo's gang can provide the heat! -- so we can all see
each other again in a grand
reunion (our last in this century), somewhere in
a ballroom high up in a
skyscraper, or in a park by the lake (pangarap..pangarap)!!
And please plan it
for May -- the magic month of our class and mine
too, personally.
Will keep you posted on LA.
Regards,
Mila

Hi Ling,
That was great news! I can't wait to see the photos.
Is anyone
scanning them for the webpage -- Vergel and Ana B. can
help install
them. Mas mabilis sila kaysa sa akin ngayon.
Anyway, I'm thrilled all this is happening now.
You know what? Efren
and I finally got together for lunch -- ang dami naming
kuwentuhan, kaya
hindi pa tapos. It's funny how for all these years
that we have been in
Toronto (siya 10, kami 14), ngayon lang kami nag-kita
-- I see his
brothers a lot as they are very active in community events.
Anyway, the
first time we met here, he came to my office, and even
brought a box of
chocolates for me Sabi ko, ano ito? Sabi
niya, sa marami niyang atraso
sa akin --
He now lives with his wife and three kids in a suburb
near Toronto,
works just a few blocks away form my office, and is quite
proud of his
children. Just like Hermie's family, he has a big
one here and in the
US, and they're very close. He says he's glad things
are well with him
now, and I think that's most important.
Sulat ka naman diyan, just to continue on with our daldalan
last
September 1997 over coffee...
at mini
reunions.
if not for 1999, the
year 2000! I'm sure everyone will help to make
it happen!
By the way, Olive Palala (consul) tells me you've been
recently promoted
to chief of mission? Congratulations!
Give my regards to your family.
Mila

Pasa-bilis, Ana B. Sure nice to hear form Ling.
Forgot to add the Vancouver branch in the groups that
could spearhead
the NAmerican reunion -- now we have in the US the East
Coast branch,
the West Coast branch, and in Canada, the Eastern Branch
and the Western
Branch (Lulu, Ed, Florante...)

I agree that we should plan a very grand reunion, perhaps
for the year 2000,
the new millenium. Also, we will have plenty of time
to look for other
classmates whom we have not seen at all since high school
or college. Maybe we
should make a master list of people we still need to
look for, yung walang mga
address and send this to all the classmates in Ana's
list in case theyhave
info on any of the "missing links".
The pictures taken of the mini-reunion in N.Y. were taken
by Franklin and
Ester. As soon as Ester sends me the copies, I will try
to send ithem through
the webpage .It was really good to see familiar faces,
Ester and Rodolfo
particularly since I had not seen them for ages. Kahit
na taga N.Y. na ako
kuno, I felt like a typical tourist last night, staring
at the neon lights in
Times Square, panay ang posing namin.
I actually got my promotion about two years ago
pa. I guess the real
promotion is when I get my own embassy and be called
Ambassador. Maybe that's
where we can have another reunion, wherever that may
be.
I know I haven't been in touch as much as I would have
wanted to. There's so
much going on in the UN that sometimes I don't know what
to pick up first
among the clutter of papers I have on my desk. Right
now, I am attending the
Committee of NGOs, the body that reviews applications
for consultative status
with the Economic and Social Council of the UN. We have
about 300 applications
to look at. This on top of the other issues I have to
take care of. I am
beginning to realize that multilateral work is for the
young and the single.
Good to hear from you as always. I will try to be in
touch more often.
Ling

Grand Reunion in the works!
