Erskine Street is the newest Belt Parkway exit,
opened in 2002 as the gateway to, no pun intended, the equally new Gateway
Shopping Center. I had never heard of Erskine Street before this exit came
about and for all I know, Erskine Street itself may never have existed
before. No attempts were made to stone face or otherwise adorn this new
overpass, just as no adornment was given the neighboring Pennsylvania Avenue
bridge Gateway is anchored by such shopping mall usuals as Home Depot, BJ's Wholesale Club, Marshalls, Staples, etc. The prime draw, however, is Target, who I've sadly learned the hard way sells shoddy junk. At least in my experience, two jackets I bought betrayed their lousy manufacture within less than six months, during which they were worn nowhere near enough to justify any problems. Given my poor experience with them, at least for pricier goods such as outerwear, jackets, etc, and anything under their house brands, I wouldn't touch their garbage with a ten foot pole. It is clear to me that their management has learned nothing from the example of their many bankrupt low price competitors. Hubris has killed more business in this nation than anything else. We'll see going forward how well Target does now that it is squarely in WalMart's gunsights, with nobody else left to divert WalMart's attention. Photos shot by Rosaura Murillo, May 2003. |
